Warriors rack up awards
Eleven Marion High School football players earned 15 all-league honors in the Mid-Central Activities Association 2005 season.
Seniors Michael Brookens and Josh Kelsey found themselves on the first team on both offense and defense as unanimous picks.
Brookens led Marion with 109 total tackles including 62 solo. He earned his offensive award for his play at center.
Kelsey passed for 678 yards and ran for 368 yards and seven touchdowns as the Warriors quarterback. He also threw eight touchdowns and just one interception.
As a defensive back, Kelsey picked off three passes, recovered a fumble, and tallied 49 total tackles.
Junior Jason Hett and senior Casey Nelson were the team's other unanimous selections.
Nelson recorded 1,153 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground, and hauled in one pass for a 68-yard touchdown.
Hett landed on the first-team special-team unit as a kick returner. He averaged 7.1 yards per punt return, and 26.9 per kick return with one touchdown.
For his play at wide receiver Hett also was a unanimous selection with 12 catches for 325 yards and four touchdowns.
The Warriors filled out a big chunk of the second-teams as well, with two on offense, one on special teams, and five on defense.
Senior Jeremy Vondenkamp was the special teams representative with an average of 32.3 yards per punt.
Senior offensive linemen Adam Depler and Shawn Britton earned the award for allowing Kelsey and Nelson to have a successful season out of the backfield.
The Warriors represented all phases of defense on the second team.
Depler and junior Emmanuel Jackson were named to the team as defensive linemen.
Depler had 57 total tackles, two for a loss, one sack, and two fumble recoveries.
Jackson led the team with six sacks, and chipped in with 53 total tackles, seven for a loss, and one fumble recovery.
Senior linebacker David DeForest was second on the team with 39 solo tackles and 76 total tackles. He also had four tackles for a loss, one interception, and one fumble recovery.
Seniors Jeff Richmond and Russell Ploutz combined for half of the Warriors' 14 interceptions and were awarded second-team honors as defensive backs.
Richmond had 29 total tackles, and two fumble recoveries to go along with his four interceptions.
Ploutz had 41 total tackles, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery.
MHS finished the season 7-2 and MCAA mid — division league champs.
