They say when it rains it pours, and for the Marion Warriors it was raining offensive yards by the bucket full.
The Warriors picked up their third win of the year Friday night at Chase County behind running backs Steven Boone and Casey Nelson. Marion defeated the Bulldogs 49-7.
From the onset, the Warriors took command of the game scoring 35 unanswered points in the first half. Clayton Chamberland started the scoring bonanza in the first quarter when he pounded it in from five yards out. Boone added the PAT kick and the Warriors led 7-0.
Minutes later, Boone blasted in from one yard and added the extra point to take a 14-point lead.
The aerial assault also got into the action. Calvin Riggs took a Chamberland pass 44 yards for a Warrior touchdown to cap off the 21-point first quarter action. Boone added the PAT.
Chamberland added a 12-yard TD to start the second-quarter scoring for the Warriors. Boone split the uprights and Marion led 28-0.
Tyler Stubenhofer got into the scoring mayhem midway through the second quarter when he caught a 13-yard pass for a touchdown to give the Warriors a 35-point advantage after Boone connected on the PAT.
After intermission, the Warrior offense simmered somewhat, but the Chase County defense couldn't hold them back entirely.
Boone's one-yard touchdown in the third quarter and subsequent PAT kick gave Marion a 42-point lead.
The Bulldogs scored in the same quarter on a 13-yard run to close the margin to 35 points.
But late in the third quarter, Marion's Nelson galloped his way to a 78-yard touchdown run. Boone connected on his seventh consecutive extra point and the Warriors took a 49-7 lead — the eventual final score after a scoreless fourth quarter.
Boone led all rushers with 225 yards on 24 carries, while Nelson had 155 yards on 11 carries.
Chamberland hit 5-of-13 of his passes for an impressive 145 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Stubenhofer snagged three passes for 88 yard and one touchdown.
While racking up 590 total yards on offense, the Warriors held Chase County to just 181 yards on the night.
Leading the defensive attack was Tyler Smith, who compiled four solo tackles, one assist, one tackle for a loss, and one forced fumble. Dale Vogel finished with three solo tackles, two assists, and one tackle for a loss.
Marion is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Cottonwood Valley League. The Warriors travel to Council Grove Friday night to take on the Braves. Council Grove defeated Herington Friday night 27-0.
Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
