Warriors score league wins

Marion Warriors remained competitive in Cottonwood Valley League action after defeating Wichita Independent Friday night and Wichita Trinity Tuesday night.

The Marion boys basketball squad came out on the plus side defeating Wichita Independent, 67-59, in Wichita. They defeated Wichita Collegiate at home Tuesday night, 45-30.

Marion vs. Independent

"We had a pretty good night Friday," said head coach Rex Ostmeyer. "And Independent was a better team than we thought they might be."

"It was a good win for us. They had some good, strong kids. But we executed the ball well and did what we needed to do," Ostmeyer said.

The Marion High School boys led throughout the basketball game starting with a one-point lead, 23-22, at the end of the first quarter.

"We kept at it and gradually pulled ahead," Ostmeyer said.

In the absence of Brian Bina, who was out due to illness, the Warriors found help in the form of Jared Hett.

"Before the game I said someone was going to need to step up for us," Ostmeyer said. "Jared Hett was that person."

In his first time to start, Jared Hett led the Warriors in scoring, putting 24 points on the scoreboard.

"Jared was five-for-five in three pointers and carried us offensively," Ostmeyer said.

Defensively, Jason Matz had 17 rebounds and Alan Vogel had five. Joel Versch grabbed eight total rebounds, with seven coming in the second half, Ostmeyer commented.

"Tyler Stubenhofer had his high game of the year with assists," the coach commented.

With the win, the Warriors are now 4-2 in Cottonwood Valley League action. The squad is 4-6 overall.

Marion vs. Wichita Trinity

"It was good to get a win," Ostmeyer commented, following Tuesday's game with Trinity.

The Warriors had just come off back- to-back losses the previous week losing heartbreakers to Sacred Heart and Herington.

"This was a different type of game than the others we've played. It was a lot slower paced," the coach said.

Defensively, the Warriors played well coming up with 18 steals, and limiting Trinity to eight field goals, Ostmeyer said.

"We held them to 30 points. Twelve of those came at the free throw line," Marion's coach said.

"It's nice to get a good feeling back. Hopefully, that will give us more confidence and keep us in league action," he said.
