Warriors take league title

The Marion boys' and girls' track team took home a first and third place finish Friday at the Cottonwood Valley League meet in Marion.

The boys out-distanced Wichita Independent by 37.5 points to take home the CVL crown.

The girls were edged out by Chase County by a point in their push for second place, but they took third in the event with 95 points nonetheless.

Several athletes led the way for the boys' team.

Joel Versch claimed first place in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Versch finished the 110-meter hurdle event in 15.45 and the 300-meter hurdle event in 43.05.

Zac Ewert took first place in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:51.6, and fifth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.05. Ewert also finished second in the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:57.34.

Nipping at Ewert's heels was Gavin Moore, who finished second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:00.48 and fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:04.81.

Alan Vogel, Steven Boone, and Tyler Smith finished first, second, and third in the boys' shot put with throws of 47'2", 45'1 1/2", and 41'7" respectively.

Boone added a first-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 159', while Vogel finished sixth with a throw of 127'.

Smith grabbed honors in the discus with a throw of 137'9", while Boone took sixth place with a throw of 124'10".

Another trio of Warrior boys took first through third honors, this time in the pole vault.

James Davis, Casey Nelson, and Moore, finished first, second, and third. Davis and Nelson vaulted 12' each and Moore vaulted 9'6".

Davis added a fifth place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5'6" and a second place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 39'7 3/4". Versch finished third in the same event clearing 5'6" as well.

Tyler Stubenhofer and Russell Ploutz finished fifth and sixth with a leaps of 18'1 3/4" and 18'1 1/4" respectively in the long jump. Stubenhofer also finished fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 37'7".

Dallas Wells and Josh Smith finished fourth and fifth in the boys' 100-meter dash. Wells finished in 11.57 and Smith finished in 12.07 seconds. Wells added a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.45 seconds.

Nelson nabbed a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.26 seconds.

The Warrior 4x100-meter relay team finished second, the 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth, and 4x800-meter relay team finished third.

Shawna Hett led the way for the Marion girls' team. Hett finished first in the pole vault clearing 8', while Chelsea Arnhold finished second with a vault of 7'6".

Megan Moore threw the javelin 118'2" to win the girls' javelin event. Amber Richmond's throw of 95'5" was enough to grab third place.

In the shot put, Sarah Regier's throw of 32'9 1/2" lifted her into second place. She also placed third in the discus with a throw of 99'6". Leann Thomas finished behind Regier in the same event with a throw of 98'4".

Allison Maddox grabbed second-place honors in the girls' 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.58 seconds and third place honors in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.83 seconds.

Jessica DeForest finished third in the mile with a time of 6:03.71 and fifth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 13:34.04.

Brandi Shipman jumped 4'6" to finish fourth in the high jump, and 30'8 1/4" in the triple jump to claim fifth place.

Toni Gordon out-distanced Shipman with a leap of 31'1 1/2" to take fourth-place in the triple jump. Gordon added a sixth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 95'10".

Alissa Vogel and Sarah Williams finished fourth and sixth respectively in the 800-meter run. Vogel finished in 2:51.45, while Williams finished in 2:53.24.

The girls' 4x800-meter relay team took third with a time of 12:03.4.

The Warriors host the regional track meet Friday at home.
