Warriors third at Halstead Invitational

The Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns high school wrestling team finished third this past weekend at the Halstead Invitational.

The Warriors rounded out a top-three finish from Mid-Central Activities Association teams that included a victory from Smoky Valley and a second-place finish from Hillsboro.

"We wrestled pretty well this weekend," MHS head coach Chad Adkins said. "We placed six out of nine that we took."

The Warriors were aching a bit at the tournament with a few wrestlers absent due to illness and injury.

Freshman Randy Regnier was held out due to sickness, and senior Thomas McGee, out since December, is questionable to even return at all this season.

Considering MHS had five of the 14 spots empty, third place didn't seem so bad.

"There are some good kids here — 4A schools," Adkins said of the tournament.

Dillon Wildin was the lone Warrior wrestler who advanced to the championship round.

He fell in the 135-pound final match, but still is 11-4 on the season.

Cody Wildin (125) and Charlie Holub (145) battled back from semifinal losses to claim third place in their respective weight classes.

Freshman Andy Shipman continued his solid first-year campaign with a fourth-place finish at 119.

He now sits at 12-8 on the season.

Adam Regnier, who leads the team with a 16-3 record, lost twice but still placed fifth at 130, as did Derek Riggs at 215.

Marion will be at Minneapolis Thursday for a makeup of the Dec. 13 scheduled match, and will wrestle Saturday at the Eureka Invitational.

The junior varsity squad will be in action Saturday as well at the Leon-Bluestem Invitational.
