Peterie-Shipman scores 36 points in Douglas rout
With a chance to avenge an earlier season loss to Burrton and advance into the championship game at the Eli J. Walter Invitational basketball tournament Thursday night, the Marion girls' basketball team fell four points short in a 54-50 semi-final loss to the Chargers.
In first-quarter action, the Warriors found themselves trailing by just two points. The Chargers took an early 13-11 lead into the following quarter.
But things heated up in the second quarter as the two teams traded basket after basket en route to a 19-18 second quarter offensive storm which found Burrton in command at half-time with a 32-29 advantage.
After intermission, the Warrior defense came out with a vengeance. Marion held the Chargers to just five points in the third quarter, while compiling 10 of their own to take a 39-37 lead into the final quarter of play.
Despite their best efforts in the fourth quarter, Marion was unable to ward off a fierce Burrton team. The Chargers ultimately outscored the Warriors 17-10 in the final period to advance to the championship game with Wichita Collegiate, sending Marion to the third-place game Saturday against. Caitlin O'Dell and Brandi Peterie-Shipman both finished with 11 points in the Warrior loss, while Toni Gordon added seven.
Douglas
The Marion girls' basketball team gave new meaning to "running on all cylinders" Jan. 27 against Douglas in the opening-round game at the Eli J. Walter Invitational basketball tourney, searing the team 94-66 behind the hot hand of Peterie-Shipman who netted 36 points in the contest.
The Warrior team scored 21 or more points in each of the four quarters. Marion dashed out early offensively outscoring Douglas 21-12 in the opening quarter, and in the second quarter blistered them for 24, while holding them to just 14 before intermission. In the second half, Douglas made a late run, but the Warriors still outscored them 25-19 and 24-21 in the third and fourth quarters. Peterie-Shipman's 36 points was complemented by Caitlin O'Dell's 14, and Sara Williams's 11. Emmy Bowers, Leann Thomas, and Toni Gordon each had seven in the Warrior romp.
With the split at the tournament, the Warriors are now 8-4 overall prior to Tuesday's contest against Centre. Marion also is 5-1 in the Cottonwood Valley League. The Warriors are on the road Tuesday against the Cougars, then host Sacred Heart Friday..
