Warriors unbeaten in CVL with 54-47 win years ago

The Warriors pulled through the Jan. 27 match-up against Sacred Heart for their sixth consecutive victory in league play.

After three straight losses, the Marion boys' basketball team was in desperate need of a win. The Warriors picked up that much-needed win in Salina and remained on course in Cottonwood Valley League play with a 54-47 win over rival Sacred Heart. However, as suspected, the Knights gave Marion all they could handle in the contest.

In the first quarter, the Warriors jumped out quickly, prompting the Sacred Heart coaching staff to call a time-out around the six-minute mark of the first period. The Knights regrouped and the two teams were deadlocked. It was Marion who took a two-point lead into the second quarter, outscoring Sacred Heart by two with an 18-16 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Knights rallied back into the game after several unforced turnovers by Marion. At half-time, Sacred Heart closed the gap to one before heading to the locker room. The Warriors shot 56 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the three-point line in the first half. After intermission, the Warriors and Knights traded baskets, but Marion remained resilient in the final two quarters, holding off the Sacred Heart offensive charge.

Marion outscored the Knights 12-11 and 13-8 in the third and fourth quarters respectively, to come away with the seven-point win. Marion shot 46.5 percent from the field for the game, and 28.5 percent from beyond the arc in the win. With the win, the Warriors are 9-4 overall and 6-0 in the CVL.

Marion was scheduled to face Centre High School Tuesday night on the road, and Sacred Heart at home Friday night.
