What happened to our heroes?

I maintain that especially this year we practically ignored our most important presidents. Maybe I just missed any patriotic things that might have been said or done. It seems to me that we are allowing George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to just fade away when we did away with their special birthdays. Presidents' Day — what does that mean, president of some club or company?

Washington, our first and wonderful leader of a young and shaky government — Lincoln, who kept us from splitting apart. I think we need to start a campaign to bring them back to their deserved place in our history.

This cold weather brings out our appetite for hot comfort foods.

Soups seem to be especially appealing. I suppose everyone has a favorite kind. Chicken and noodles with hot biscuits of rich thick chili come to mind.

My mind also goes back to other foods — maybe in other places. Although it is 40 years ago, I still remember some delicious pasta covered with a wonderful creamy cheese sauce that I had in Rome, Italy. So good! There was wonderful cheese fondue in Switzerland with special cheese bread squares for dipping.

At one of our family reunions on the Oregon coast, I had my first taste of pizza made right there in the cottage. Yummy! I still like pizza.

Of course, my mother was a wonderful cook. Her fried chicken and peach cobblers are still great memories. What do you remember as your most delicious food?

Bon appetit!
