Wildcats edge Wichita Independent

The undefeated Marion Middle School Wildcats hosted Wichita Independent Thursday and held on to their status with a score of 16-8.

The 4-0 Wildcats could not get on track as the Panther offense controlled the football. Pass interceptions, penalties, and lost fumbles plagued the Wildcats all night.

Independent struck first, leading 8-0 but the Wildcats offense scored four plays later.

Austin Hager took it in from the six-yard line then added the extra point.

Minutes later, after an 18-yard run by Hager and a 28-yard run by Justin Jacobson, the Wildcats thought they scored with a six-yard run by Jacobson. However, he was called down on the one-foot line. Calvin Jeffrey scored on the next play then added the extra point making the score 16-8.

Marion just couldn't get going. Hager had 16 carries for 81 yards. Jeffrey had nine carries for 63 yards. Jacobson added five carries for 79 yards.

With the Wildcats on the defensive most of the night, several Wildcats tallied tackles. Hager had 15, Jacob Czarnowsky 11, Hank Collett and Jacobson nine each, Brett Billings and Jeffrey seven each; Bryce Suffield and Chase Carlson four each, Zach Helmsted and John Goering three, Zan Fine and Logan Richmond two each.

Marion travels Thursday to Council Grove for the last CVJL contest. This showdown is for the final CVJL championship.
