World champion has Marion connections
Heath Voss, husband of Marion native Sarah Crofoot, won the world championship of Supercross motorcycle racing Saturday in Las Vegas.
Wearing number 28, Voss competes in the THQ World Supercross GP series. Basically, he won the moment he qualified for the main event, but still finished a solid seventh on his way to his first professional title.
Finishing with 346 points for the season, his closest competitor, Damon Huffman, finished second with 322. Third place, with 276 points, was Tyler Evans.
Voss and Huffman were tied for first place several weeks prior to the championship race.
There are 42 world-class races on a weekly basis. To qualify for the world championship, Voss had to race in Europe and the U.S.
The 2004 race season began in December in Sevilla, Spain, then to Amhem, Holland, before racing in the U.S. on Jan. 3 in Anaheim, Calif.
There were 16 races in the U.S. from January through May.
Racing a 250cc Yamaha, Voss is a member of the elite Mach I Yamaha team.
In 2003, Voss earned top-five finishes in the 250cc Supercross races at Pontiac, Mich., and Irving, Texas. His year-end ranking for 2003 was his best ever in sixth place.
Television channel ESPN2 will repeat the telecast of the championship races at 2 a.m. Friday.
Sarah is the daughter of Jim and Joni Crofoot of Marion.
A story and interview with Heath and Sarah Voss will be in next week's Marion County Record.
