Writers' night at MHS anticipates large crowd

"They Only Come Out At Night" is an opportunity for Marion High School creative writing students, freshmen through senior, to share their talent with the community. Few people know what it is, and even some who attend are a little frightened by the black clothing and snapping.
Dark clothing, along with all the snapping, which takes the place of clapping, are traditions for the event, but the real focus is, of course, the writing.
"If you haven't been, it's a brand-new experience," said Janet Killough, creative writing teacher at MHS.
Changed from a previously scheduled date in the school calendar, the event will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the MHS music room. There is no charge and refreshments will be served.
Killough said the night is to show the "wonderful writers we have in the school," adding that "some of these people could really go far with their writing."
Between this event and the musical, an estimated 70 students are expected to participate. Twelve students are in both the musical and creative writing.
When asked how she manages to balance teaching all her classes, directing the musical, and organizing the creative writing night, Killough responded, "That's a question I've been asking myself lately."
When asked how she felt about those students involved in both the musical and creative writing, Killough said, "People involved in both of them are very talented and, obviously, dedicated, or they wouldn't be putting in so much time. Otherwise, who would spend that much time doing those things?"
What can the public do to encourage those students willing to put in so much time? "Show your support for the things they work so hard for," Killough concluded.
Students who plan to participate in the event are Jillyan Berg, Carol Burton, Hannah Eis,
Megan Helmstead, Trevor Jones, Ashley Keezer, Renae Lundgren,.
Ashley McMillan, Nicole Raleigh, Ashlee Pickering, Cliffton Richmond, Misti Richmond, Tim Schuler, Ashley Secrest, Breona Smith.

Josh Fruechting, Jeremy Gillen, Virginia Helzer, Michelle Hulett, Kathrin Lange, Michelle Miesse, Natalie Williams, and Michael Yates.
