Yearbook students attend fall conference

Marion High School yearbook staff attended the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Fall Conference Sept. 26 in Manhattan. Joining them were photographers who help out with the yearbook and another group of students who are thinking about starting a school newspaper at MHS.
The keynote speaker at KSPA was Jan Watt. She told a story about one of her students who was in an alcohol-related accident. Watt wanted journalism students to understand they have a responsibility to cover this type of story to inform and influence student behavior.
Throughout the rest of the day students attended sessions on yearbook, newspaper, broadcast journalism, and staff motivation.
MHS students did not get to hear Bill Kurtis speak about his career in broadcast journalism.
Students who attended were Chelsea Arnhold, Jamie Bernhardt, Jessica Bernhardt, Rachel Davidson, Sarah Davidson, James Davis, Kylie Hardey, Kendra Holub, Renae Lundgren, Mindy Maag, Allison Maddox, Lena O'Connor, Molly Rhodes, Natasha Steinborn, Katie Whitaker, and Krystal Williams. Lois Smith, yearbook adviser, and Carolyn Moore, English teacher also attended.
