Fifty family members and friends gathered Sunday for a surprise birthday party in Abilene honoring Elma Piper's 88th birthday. Roy and Rose Olive Hett, Glen and Pam Hett, Samantha and Kyle, and Paul and Jane Hett were among the well wishers.
Eileen Sieger met her friend, Juanita Bonebrake for lunch Friday in Emporia. Phil and Renate Hurtig came to visit Skip and Eileen Sieger Sunday and ate dinner together at Kingfisher's Inn.
Jackie Hett bowled in a tournament this past weekend at Salina. Melanie Ensey from Valley Center and grandson Peyton spent the weekend with Jackie Hett.
Jane Makovec and Marie Navrat attended Harvest House Friday in Florence at the Catholic church. Samantha Ratzloff visited Tuesday morning with Marie Navrat. Amber Ratzloff had supper Wednesday with Marie and Ashley Ratzloff stayed Saturday night with her grandmother, Marie.
Leonard and Rosalie Klassen's big farm sale was Saturday. Arlene and Cal Dahl from Minnesota were here all week helping them get ready for the sale and are still here helping them move to Marion. Other family members who were here over the weekend were Vickie and Marv Fisher, Ashley, Aaron, and Allegra, Cora and Don Sorenson, Kelsie, Kelly, and Keaton, and Kami and Eric Van Campon and Parker. They all had dinner together Sunday at Kingfisher's Inn.
Leon Hayen came Wednesday and stayed through Saturday helping John Hayen get equipment over to Leonard Klassen's for the Saturday sale. He visited Dorothy Hayen several times while here. John Hayen and Virginia Downing took Dorothy Sunday to Florence to eat and enjoy the sunshine. She reviewed each farm they passed en route and told who had lived on each property. We all hope we have as good a memory when we are 98.
Vickie and Don Kraus got to baby-sit Jeremy and Melane's three boys, Triston, Grant, and Devin, this weekend while the parents went skiing. Chris and Kristi Mercer, Colton and Braedon of Topeka also spent the weekend with Don and Vickie Kraus.
Edmund Steiner and Vicki Smolik attended the wedding, dinner, and dance of Greg and Pam Holub Saturday at the Pilsen Catholic church. Kathy and Paul Swan and Becky and Tim Makovec, Morgan and Tyler came out to the Smolik farm Thursday to do spring cleanup and had dinner with Vicki Smolik in the evening. Vicki and Edmund attended the workman breakfast Sunday at the Pilsen Catholic church. Vicki helped with the serving.
Cy Goertz drove to Burdick Sunday and had dinner with Clint and Diana Jost and James.
Shirley and David Bowers had lunch Friday in Newton with Janelle Paden. They went to the movie "The Passion of the Christ" in the afternoon. The Bowers met Russell and Stephanie Bowers Sunday in Salina and had dinner together.
Mary Beth Bowers did a yeast bread demonstration at Marion High School Tuesday for a foods class. She drove to Hesston Friday to visit Sharon Weaver at her farm home. Mary Beth and Sharon were college friends. Mary Beth and Greg Bowers attended the Klassen farm sale Saturday.
Ray Melson and daughter Linda from Wichita visited Roseva McLinden this past week. Richard and Patty McLinden and Chuck and Lori McLinden drove to Guthrie, Okla., this weekend and attended the National Finals Steer Roping contest. Jared and Lauren McLinden spent the weekend with Mark and Kim Harms and family.
Ken and Margie Nienstedt attended the funeral services Friday for Charles Nesser at Marion Christian Church. Ken and Margie attended a birthday party for Joyce at the home of Allen and Kelly Sangwin in White City. Other family members there were her children, Billy and Shelly Cunningham and five girls and Doug and Christi Williamson and children.

The Hayen family celebrated Dorothy Hayen's 98th birthday Saturday afternoon at St. Luke Living Center. Family members present were Leon and Cate Hayen of Topeka, Marlene O'Neal of Junction City, John Hayen, Max and Donna Hayen, Brent and Paula Hayen, Marilyn Geis, Courtney and Erica Geis, and Virginia Downing. Dorothy Hayen's birthday is March 9. We wish her health and happiness for several more years. Virginia and John took her to Florence to eat Sunday dinner and she enjoyed visiting with everyone.
Don Argo spent the weekend with Howard and Beth Collett and they attended a wrestling meet at Strong City. Colletts' grandson Hank Collett was one of the wrestlers. Hank is the son of Keith and Anne Collett. Anne has gone to Iowa to be with her father. He was airlifted to the hospital in Galva, Iowa. Keith is home with the children keeping the home fires burning.
Jeannine Bateman has been going to see her mother, Alvina Skibbe, the past two weeks. Alvina had a stroke and is in rehab. She is improving each day. Kristine was home for the weekend with Jeannine and they visited Alvina.
Shirley Bowers attended World Day of Prayer Friday at the Presbyterian church. The event was sponsored by Church Women United. Richard Bowers was a Sunday dinner guests of Shirley and David Bowers.
Greg Bowers was the Gideon speaker for Sunday services at Community Bible Church at Medora. Mary Beth Bowers did a puppet show Wednesday afternoon for the Marion Christian Church Kid's Club.
Charles and Rosalene Stinchcomb visited Sunday afternoon with Charlene and Ralph Janzen in Hillsboro.
Youngtown FCE regular meeting and luncheon was held Tuesday noon at McGillicuddy's. The lesson was given by Darlene Schmidt on "Where in the World is Tasmania?" Members present in addition to Darlene were Lorene Smith, Betty Ireland, Gertie Mahoney, Roseva McLinden, and Margaret Ireland.
Joe and Ethan Johnson came Sunday afternoon to do spring cleanup for me. What a blessing it is to have young willing workers. I feel really loved.
Vicki Smolik attended the funeral services Monday for Magdalen Klenda at the Pilsen church.
Richard and Patty McLinden gave a birthday dinner Sunday for Lori McLinden. Other family present were Roseva McLinden, Chuck McLinden, Lauren and Jarret.
Vickie Fisher spent Wednesday and Thursday helping Rosalie and Leonard Klassen get ready for their move to town. Leonard and Rosalie were in Wichita doing business on Friday and had supper with Vickie and Marv Fisher, Aaron and Allegra.
ON Wednesday Eileen Sieger met a friend, Donna Ames of Derby, Wednesday at the Old Mill, a tasty shop in Wichita. They went on to an afternoon at the garden show.
Skip and Eileen went to Wichita Saturday to visit his only remaining uncle and wife, John and Ruth Dawson.
