Edmund Steiner and Vicki Smolik spent the Fourth of July weekend in Phillipsburg at the home of Rod and Teresa Linton, Kandace and Kassidy. They drove over Saturday following the funeral services for Vicki's aunt, Blanche Oborny, at the Pilsen Catholic church. Blanche lived in Norton when she died, but was brought back to be buried by her first husband. Vicki has cucumbers and other garden vegetables she is preserving for food for the winter.
Jeannine Bateman drove to Newton this weekend to visit her mother, Alvina Skibbe, and was pleasantly surprised to find her brother, Jerald Skibbe, from Greensburg also visiting. Jeannine and Kristine Bateman participated in the Peabody and Ramona Fourth of July parades.
Bill and Rosa Spinden of Cottonwood Falls and Beth and Howard Collett met Sunday evening at Emporia for supper and visiting.
Betty Ireland stopped here one morning this past week to visit me.
Cy Goertz, David and Shirley Bowers, and Pat Oller attended the cattlemen's appreciation dinner Saturday evening in Emporia at the Sertoma Club. On Sunday, Shirley, David, and Luke Bowers drove to Colby for the annual Fourth of July cookout. Abigail Paden joined them Monday evening for a visit with Mary Lou and Rick Just and Kyle. Abigail and Shirley went to the nursing home Tuesday to visit Viola Cash and then to visit at the home of Marvin and Thelma Cash. They stopped in Deerfield for a visit with Warren Hett in his church office. The Bowers returned home Wednesday with Abigail Paden and Kyle Just as extra passengers. Kyle will be visiting the Bowers and Just families this week.
David Bowers, accompanied by Shirley, sang a solo for the Eastmoor church special music Sunday morning. We enjoyed hearing his voice again. David and Shirley Bowers and Greg and Mary Beth Bowers, Luke and Kyle Just ate Sunday noon dinner at Eastmoor.
Kyle Just has been visiting all week with Greg and Mary Beth Bowers and Luke.
Skip and Eileen Sieger and Rose Olive Hett also reported attending the Sunday noon dinner at Eastmoor. Aline Bernhardt took Rose Olive home following the dinner.
Lavera Bernhardt took me to dinner Wednesday to help me celebrate my birthday. We enjoyed the program following dinner about how the Marion County Lake was built and the history of the CCC boys who worked in Marion. Virginia Downing brought George Downing's footlocker from his days as a CCC boy. That was interesting to see.
My sister, Jo Gearhart, spent Saturday with me and we had lunch together in Canton at a tea room. The tea room is decorated for July with paraphernalia from the history of wars in our country. They have a Revolutionary War uniform and also one from the Civil War and lots of objects from World War I and Vietnam. The fireplace mantel holds a display of "Gone With the Wind" dolls. This is a neat place to eat.
David and Shirley Bowers heard that David's sister-in-law, Lorene Bowers, died. She was the wife of Joe Bowers. Her services will be at Hope cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday.
I hosted the Marion County Food Bank Thursday morning. I do this as a service for Youngtown FCE club.
Skip and Eileen Sieger drove Tuesday to Fort Scott to visit Eileen's cousins, Dale and Betty Johnson. The Johnsons have moved and Skip and Eileen got to see their new home.
Gladys Fuller visited Monday morning with Rosalie Klassen. The Klassens ate lunch Sunday at Eastmoor. Ashley Fisher returned from Argentina Saturday after a 24-hour air flight and a three-hour car trip. She was tired but she had a great time while she was there and said she would return in a heartbeat.
