Youngtown: Bowers' host family celebration

Ben and Natasha Bowers and Skyler flew in to Wichita Wednesday from Anchorage, Alaska. Greg and Mary Beth took them to visit JoAnn and Charles Kjellin so the Kjellins could meet their great-granddaughter.

JoAnn Kjellin loved to entertain and wanted one last family celebration, so the family gathered on the Fourth of July at the home of Greg and Mary Beth.

Those attending were Rhonny, Stephan, and Luke Bowers, Ben and Natasha Bowers and Skyler, Charles Kjellin, Phyllis and Gene Dettmer of Olathe, Jennifer and Chris Sauerwein of Newton, Pat and Daryl Enos and Mitch, Doug and Amy Kjellin, Erik, Andrew, and Adam of McPherson, Karen and Dale Kelly, Shalene, David, and Mark of Nixa, Mo., Charlene and Ken Keith, Debbie and Buck Firth, Jeanne and Jonathan, Chris Keith, and Nathan Keith.

The Bowers took four-generation pictures. Families went across the road to visit JoAnn as she could tolerate company. The Bowers had a big fireworks display that JoAnn enjoyed from her bed.

JoAnn Kjellin died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday and will be missed by her friends and family. Her funeral service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

Ben returned to Alaska Sunday afternoon, however Natasha and Skylar will be here through Friday.

Shirley and David Bowers met Betsy Bunnel and Josh early Wednesday morning in Ottawa. They had breakfast togehter, then drove to the Kansas City airport to meet Doug and Janelle Paden, Matthew, Abigail, and Jonathan who were flying in from Nepal. Carl and Lela Paden joined them for lunch then all went to the Carl Paden home for visiting.

Weekend visitors at the David Bowers home were Doug and Janelle Paden and children, Bev and Kevin Jennison, Betsy and Randy Bunnel, Joshua and Kelli, Daniel and Kim Bowers, Amber, Bryce, and Breanna, Mary Lou Just and Kyle, Todd Just, Crystal Gersch, Eric Just, Brian and Shelinda Bowers, Russell and Stephanie Bowers, Adam and Andrea Bowers, Alexis and Alex, Greg Bowers, Rhonny, Stephan, Luke, Ben and Natasha Bowers and Skyler, and Richard Bowers. Most of the above Bowers family attended a potluck dinner held Sunday at Eastmoor to welcome the Padens home.

Diana and Clint Jost, James and John and David and Jessye Goertz and Rachael hosted a picnic lunch Saturday at Hilltop Manor, complete with homemade ice cream, honoring Cy Goertz's 80th birthday. Pat and Curt Davis drove in from Indiana at 11 a.m. and will be staying awhile in Kansas. Maryanna and Orville Scharenberg and David and Mark Scharenberg were additional honored guests. Youngtown people reporting they attended were Roy and Rose Olive Hett, Ray and Eleanor Davidson, Virginia Downing, Leonard and Rosalie Klassen, Marilyn and Jim Cox, and John and Bev Goering. The Davises spent the night with the Goertzs and attended Sunday morning services at Eastmoor. They ate together Sunday noon at Florence. Cy and L.Dena attended the 20th year anniversary celebration honoring Dr. Don Hodson Sunday afternoon.

I hosted a covered dish luncheon in my home Tuesday. Guests were LuCretia Winkley, Roseva McLinden, Judy Christensen, Gertie Mahoney, and Lorene Smith.

Richard and Patty McLinden had a cookout Saturday noon to celebrate the birthdays of Chuck McLinden and Susie Morton and the 10th wedding anniversary of Susie and Craig Morton. Guests other than the above mentioned wer Bud and Roseva McLinden, Lori McLinden, Lauren and Jarret, and Regan and Jordan Morton.

Jackie Hett attended a couples bridal shower Sunday afternoon at Garden Plain honoring Jeff Ensey and his bride-to-be Laura.

Vicki Smolik hosted her annual Fourth of July picnic and fireworks party Wednesday night. Teresa Linton, Ashley and Lacy came from Phillipsburg on Tuesday and spent the Fourth with Vicki. Additional guests were Kathy and Paul Swan, Becky and Tim Makovec, Morgan and Tyler, Justin and Katrina Griffin, Kandace and Kassidy, Edmund Steiner, Sam and Diane Griffin, Lorene Havlik, Mrs. Paul Schamberg, and Katrina's friend, Danita. There was lots of food and good fireworks enjoyed by all.

Dorothy Hayen reported that they have been busy with wheat harvest and hay crop. Virginia and Marilyn have been bringing supper out from town for the busy menfolks. Marilyn Cox visited Dorothy Friday afternoon.

Roy and Rose Olive Hett, Shirley and David Bowers, and Cy and L.Dena Goertz viewed the Peabody parade from the porch of Marilyn and Jim Cox Thursday afternoon and ate a light supper there.

Sarah and Rachel Davidson took part in the Tri-County horse show Sunday night. Rachel helped with the 4-H Play Day Tuesday afternoon. Sarah returned home Wednesday from Wisconsin where she had spent a week at a 4-H exchange camp. Greg, Rose, Sarah, and Rachel celebrated Greg's birthday Monday with dinner out and a movie.

Calvin and Arlene Dahl and Rosalie and Leonard Klassen enjoyed homemade ice cream and cake last Sunday night at the home of Vernon and Rachel Friesen. The Dahls returned last Friday to their home in Maple Grove, Minn.

Leonard and Rosalie Klassen had Tuesday night supper with Elmer and Leonore Klassen to help celebrate Elmer's birthday. Vickie and Marv Fisher, Ashley, Aaron, and Allegra spent the Fourth of July with Leonard and Rosalie and had a big fireworks party Thursday night.

Betty May took Gerry Mills and me to Newton Thursday to the movie "Mr. Deeds." We had supper at Applebee's.

Louis and Sarah Stika and Janet and Doug Marler were cookout guests of Rita and Jeff Tomlinson Thursday evening.

Fourth of July weekend guests of Howard and Beth Collett were Linda and Sarah Knaack, Keith Winter, and Amanda of Wellington, Colo. Amanda will be spending a couple of weeks with Howard and Beth. The Colletts hosted a birthday dinner on the Fourth for Hank, 13, and Lucy, 11. Keith, Anne, and Caroline also were guests.

Lesley Allen, Skip Sieger, and three other pilots did a fly-over at the Ramona parade. Skip, Eileen, and Lesley went to Abilene Sunday to visit the Eisenhower museum and other places of interest. Lesley and Skip flew to El Dorado Saturday morning for breakfast and an air show. Lesley has spent a couple of weeks with her family and will return to her home in Illinois on Thursday.

Chelsea Turk is visiting her grandparents, Faye and Jerry Makovec this week and enjoyed the Peabody fireworks with them Thursday night.

I had dinner at McGillicuddy's Sunday with Dorothy Conyers, Charla Wheeler, Gerry Mills, and Betty May.
