Youngtown: Bowers return from Alaska

Mary Beth and Greg Bowers returned Tuesday from their trip to Anchorage, Alaska, where they attended funeral services for Ben Bowers' mother-in-law Bonnie Davidson. She was killed in a motorcycle accident in New Zealand. Mary Beth and Greg stayed in Ben and Tasha's new home and Greg got to meet his granddaughter, Skyler, for the first time. Mary Beth has lots of pictures of Skyler and "Grandpa Greg." The Iditarad race started the weekend they were there and they got to see the last of the 64 participants start on the race from the first checkpoint.
Roseva McLinden hosted Youngtown FCE Tuesday noon for a lesson and lunch on frozen stir fry meals. Members present were LuCretia Winkley, Lorene Smith, Judy Christensen, Gertie Mahoney, Darlene Schmidt, and Margaret Ireland.
Morgan Makovec spent Saturday with her grandmother, Vicki Smolik.
Dorothy Hayen came home form the hospital on Friday and celebrated her 96th birthday with Leon and Cate Hayen, John Hayen, Max and Donna Hayen, Virginia Downing, and Marilyn Geis. Carmen Parrack had returned to Texas on Tuesday. Dorothy received many cards and flowers from family and friends. She is much improved.
Ray and Jamie Helmer came Feb. 28 to visit Dorothy and John and had a birthday cake for John. John Umberger from the Elk community visited the Hayen family on Friday. John attended the watershed meeting Thursday night at Country Dreams.
Roy and Rose Olive Hett took Warren and Marilyn Hett and Mary Ann to dinner Sunday at Kingfisher's Inn.
Mary Lou and Rick Just and Kyle stayed overnight Friday with Shirley and David Bowers. Daniel and Kim Bowers, Bryce and Breanna spent Saturday with David and Shirley. Luke Bowers visited his grandparents and cousins Saturday afternoon.
Shirley Bowers attended the World Day of Prayer service Friday night at Eastmoor.
Alvina Hoffman attended the retired teachers' meeting and dinner with Pauline Edmunds on Thursday at the senior center. Alvina and I ate dinner with Marilyn and Jim Cox and the singles of Eastmoor on Sunday. Alvina played the piano for the Sunday afternoon church service at Marion Manor and visited Ruth Hiebert at the manor.
Gene Obee called on Bud and Roseva McLinden Sunday afternoon.
Eileen Sieger enjoyed the program given by Bev Goering on her cross collection Thursday morning at the hospital auxiliary meeting. Bettie Batt hosted a birthday coffee Friday morning honoring Marian Crofoot. Eileen was an invited guest.
Skip and Eileen Sieger were among the invited dinner guests at the home of John and Rita Spinden Saturday night in Cottonwood Falls.
Faye and Jerry Makovec took Delores and Dwayne Stroda of Herington to dinner Saturday for Delores' birthday.
Warren and Marilyn Hett and Mary Ann were Sunday night supper guests of Greg and Mary Beth Bowers, Rhonny, Luke, and Steven.
Pam and Glen Hett hosted a dinner Sunday for several Eastmoor couples and their families who are doing a study program together. The Greg Bowers family was part of the group.
Leonard and Rosalie Klassen visited Don and Bernice Friend in Newton Tuesday afternoon.
Burt and Alice Jost from Hillsboro called on Leonard and Rosalie Klassen Thursday afternoon. The Klassens and Leonard and Merlie Friesen had dinner together Sunday and visited for a while at the Klassen farm. The Klassens attended the open house Sunday afternoon honoring the 50th wedding anniversary of Jack and Sylvia Helmer.

Dorothy Hayen went to S. Luke Hospital Saturday afternoon but was much improved Sunday morning and was sitting up this Monday morning and was going to try walking with hopes of returning home soon. Dorothy will be 96 March 8. Let's all send her cards to show how much we love her.
Pat Navrat spent Tuesday with her mother, Marie Navrat. Marie went to the "World's Fair" at Marion Elementary school on Wednesday. Amber Ratzloff had a project there. Ron and Deb Navrat and Marie had supper in Newton Thursday evening and stopped in rural Walton to visit Joe and Lisa Navrat on the way home.
Marie Navrat and Faye and Jerry Makovec attended the funeral of George Endres on Thursday.
Ray and Rita Kraus and Faye and Jerry Makovec attended the Rosary for George Endres Wednesday night at Holy Family Catholic Church in Marion. He will be missed by a lot of us. George and Jerry worked at my house several times and did great carpenter work. I always enjoyed visiting with George.
We awakened Saturday morning to a winter wonderland around here. We received about two inches of snow in the area preceded by a little rain on Friday. The temperature has been cold — zero degree Saturday morning and five degrees Sunday morning were reported by Youngtown people. It is supposed to get warmer today (Monday).
Shirley Bowers accompanied a busload of senior center people to the Lawn and Garden Show in Wichita Thursday. She especially enjoyed the many different air plants on display.
Pastor John and Beverly Goering hosted a Youngtown soup and pie supper Sunday night at Eastmoor. Attending were Shirley and David Bowers, Roy and Rose Olive Hett, Cy and L.Dena Goertz, Leonard and Rosalie Klassen, Ray and Eleanor Davidson, Alvina Hoffman, Jim and Marilyn Cox, Ivanlee and Mary Ann Timm, Bula Good, LaVera Bernhardt, and June and Lois Jost.
I was hostess for the food bank Thursday morning and trained Darlene Schmidt so she can do this for Youngtown FCE in March.
Cy and L.Dena Goertz went to Burdick Sunday to attend the birthday dinner honoring Diana Jost. Additional guests were Beth and Nick Weibert of Goessel, James and John Jost and Tori Hecht of Manhattan, and Naomi Nelson.
L.Dena Goertz and I attended the funeral of Kathryn Thole Monday morning at the Strassburg Baptist Church. Kathryn helped me quilt at the senior center and always was a big help. She also quilted with the Eastmoor ladies. She will be missed.
Eileen Sieger drove to Wichita Wednesday and met Donna Ames and her sister Rita. They attended the Flower and Garden Show. Instead of more orchids, Eileen brought home a flag pole for the yard, so we'll soon see a lighted flag flying in their yard.
Roseva McLinden and Patty McLinden went to El Dorado Sunday for a bridal shower of Roseva's nephew. The bride was snowed in, so Bryan Hess received the gifts and thanked the guests.
Alvina Hoffman went with Erna Mae Yeagley to the 60+ meeting in Hillsboro Thursday morning. The program was the history of the Kirby House and the recipes used there that had been made into a cookbook that was for sale and was being autographed by the author. Alvina and Erna Mae ate lunch at Tabor.
Charla Wheeler drove Betty May, Gerry Mills, and myself to Friends University Sunday afternoon to attended the spring ballet performance. Emily Johnson met us there and all enjoyed three short productions sponsored by the Wichita Ballet Theatre. I had never purchased ballet tickets before — have attended only in Montana when Katty Ireland performed. We all enjoyed the afternoon.
