Youngtown has first hard frost of season

By MARGARET IRELAND

Youngtown correspondent

We finally got the killing frost and had ice on the bird feeders and stock tanks a couple of mornings this past week. I hated to lose my flowers but had them longer than some folk, as they are protected by the large cedar trees.

Ray Helmer was involved in a farm related accident Saturday afternoon and was taken by helicopter to Wesley hospital where he had surgery Sunday. The surgery went well and he was doing as well as could be expected Sunday night.

Richard Bowers came for a visit Saturday afternoon. Shirley and David and Mary Beth and Greg Bowers attended the Charge Conference Sunday afternoon at the Lincolnville United Methodist Church.

Mary Beth Bowers spent Thursday at Gary Ewerts middle school social studies classes giving a presentation on wheat growing to a finished loaf of bread. The kids learned about kinds of wheat, how it is harvested, and the kind of yield a farmer can expect. They actually ground the wheat in class and baked the bread. Some of the children have never seen bread baked and didn't know that bread needed yeast to make it light. By the end of classes, Mary Beth had baked six loaves of bread. This is the fifth year she has done the program for Gary.
