Zac Ewert named Kansas Community Star

Marion High School student Zac Ewert is one of only 135 high school students selected for a state honor.

On Monday he was named by Lt. Gov. Garry Sherrer as a Lieutenant Governor's Community Star Award .

"These high school students are role models for all of us," Sherrer said. He established the awards after attending an America's Promise meeting in Washington, D.C.

Ewert was nominated for his volunteer projects through scouts and church, and for volunteering the past three summers to deliver meals to senior citizens.

Each high school is allowed to submit the name of one student. A total of 135 students from 112 cities were selected. Each received a congratulatory letter, certificate of recognition, and an engraved gold star.

Eunice Voth, Goessel, also was selected. Her volunteer projects include helping provide technology training to residents at Bethesda Home.

Youths are an important resource to communities, Sherrer said. Those who volunteer are more likely to become productive citizens and less likely to engage in destructive behavior.

"These students have given thousands of hours to activities such as spending time with the elderly, mentoring troubled youth, supporting Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs, working with the Special Olympics, and volunteering everywhere from children's homes to hospitals to food kitchens," Sherrer said. "Nothing has impressed me more than witnessing students unselfishly giving of themselves to their communities."
