Marion County Commission approved and Commission chairman Roger Fleming signed a contract with Treanor Architects P.A. on Tuesday for work on a new county jail.

Dustin Tyler Smith, 24, of McPherson, made his first appearance in McPherson County Court June 1 on the single charge of premeditated first degree murder of Justin John Milne, 30, of McPherson. Milne’s body was found May 29 1.5 miles east of his burning vehicle near Marion Reservoir.

Catholics and Protestants, men and women, young and old, came from all walks of life over the weekend to walk for a priest who died helping others. Their destination Sunday was Pilsen, home of Father Emil Kapaun who was a prisoner of war in Korea where he served as a chaplain.

More than 175 people, including alumni, guests, and teachers, attended the 115th annual Florence Alumni banquet May 28 in the Florence gymnasium.

Two professional bluegrass bands, Brightwater Junction and KB Treblemakers, will perform June 18 at Bluegrass at the Lake. The event is free and will be held at the beach area of Marion County Lake.

Washburn University junior Lucy Collett and recent MHS graduate Donna Cady are pictured separately as each accepts a scholarship from St. Luke Auxiliary representative Janet Herzet.

The auxiliary gives a $1,000 scholarship to students entering a medical field. Collett plans to start nursing school this fall and Cady plans to attend Wichita State University to study exercise science.
