Six applicants filed for two open Marion City Council positions before the Tuesday filing deadline. Candidates are Steve Smith, Lee Vogel, David Mayfield, Todd Heitschmidt, Jerry Dieter, and Richard Varenhorst. Since there are not seven candidates, a primary is not necessary. The general election will be April 3.

Marion Elementary School sixth grade students competed Tuesday in the school’s qualifying round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. First place winner Colin Williams and Lindsey Sigel, who finished second, will represent MES in the countywide spelling bee Feb. 8 at the USD 408 Performing Arts Center. Devin Hamm placed third, and is the alternate for the county competition.

Staff writer Rowena Plett writes in the newspaper’s “Farm Section” pages about Jeff Ensey, who joined his .grandmother Jackie Hett and uncle Steve Hett in October 2009 in managing the 65-year-old W.J. Hett Ranch.

Hett, 82, said the 38-year-old Ensey, is a reliable and efficient manager, allowing her to pursue personal interests in addition to her involvement in the ranch. The ranch was established in 1946 after she and her husband, Walter, were married.

Three games, three wins, two by double digits, and the Marion Warriors convincingly laid claim Saturday of the Cougar Classic tournament at Centre. Marion team members included Mikael Antozyck, Timothy Knolla, Taylor Heidebrecht, Zach Robson, Grif Case, Ethan Hett, Scott Jones, Jordan Hett, Jacob Harper, James Jones, and Wiley Lundy.

Krause, 64, was driving a tractor towing, partially on the shoulder, an empty four-wheel, flat-bed trailer and was struck when the eastbound semi-truck pulling an empty cattle hauler approached Krause from behind.
