Exactly 51 years to the day after Air Force Major Dean A. Klenda’s plane was shot down over North Vietnam, his remains will be laid to rest with full military honors Sept. 17 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church cemetery in Pilsen.

His remains were discovered in 2014 after years of searching.

Marion resident Melvin Honeyfield, longtime employee of this newspaper, got involved with planning Florence Labor Day festivities more than 15 years ago. This year, he was honored as the event’s grand marshal.

New Peabody Market owners Mike and Jadina Crow are up and running with changes ranging from new paint to new inventory.

Some of those projects may draw on $10,000 the couple borrowed from a Marion-based loan fund administered through Marion Economic Development Inc.

County commissioners last week heard a suggestion from Marion City Council member John Wheeler that the county hire an administrator to oversee day-to-day operational matters and free up commissioners to focus on “higher things.”

But commissioner Randy Dallke, while terming the idea “super,” said the county didn’t have enough money coming in to afford hiring an administrator.
