After Marion County Commission put final touches on estimated costs of a new county jail Friday afternoon, Marion Mayor Mary Olson informed the commission that Marion residents were circulating a petition opposing location of the new jail in the city’s industrial park.

Labor Day this year offered something for everyone, with celebrations taking place in Florence, in Burdick, and at Marion County Lake.

The first varsity high school action that the new school gymnasium will see will be this Saturday with the 12-team Mid-Central Activities Association volleyball tournament.

The 30th annual Marion Art in the Park and Craft Show will be Sept. 20 in Central Park, downtown Marion, and the 39th annual Hillsboro Arts and Crafts Fair will be the same day in downtown Hillsboro.

The family of Norman and Vivian Mueller, rural Marion, requested a card shower to celebrate their parents’ 60th wedding anniversary. A family celebration will mark the occasion during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Tim Young and Judy Noller, both of Marion, were crowned champions Aug. 24 of the annual Marion Country Club championship men’s and women’s tournaments. Tim Christensen of Marion earned the senior championship trophy.
