33-mile chase hits 120 mph in county
Staff writer
A man pulled over for speeding Tuesday morning on I-135 in McPherson County fled police for many miles — 33 of those miles through Marion County.
Josh Huebach, who Undersheriff Larry Starkey said lived in Marion County at one time, fled through Marion County, including the City of Peabody, then Harvey County, then into Sedgwick County in an attempt to elude deputies and state troopers.
Huebach drove at speeds of up to 120 mph on paved roads and up to 80 mph on unpaved roads.
Marion County deputies joined the chase when Huebach entered the county on 180th Rd. at 9:54 a.m.
From there, he drove to K-15, went north and onto US-56. He took US-56 to Eagle Rd., then went back to 180th Rd. and drove to Kanza Rd.
When he reached 130th Rd., he took it to Nighthawk, driving to US-50, then entered Peabody on Maple St.
In Peabody, he drove Maple St. to 2nd St., then drove down Locust St. and left town on 60th Rd.
Marion deputies stopped chasing Huebach when he crossed the Harvey County line at 10:32 a.m.
“Marion County deputies had minimal involvement,” Starkey said. “They were only to be backup for the McPherson County deputy. One deputy was in the chase. One was in the area but not actually in it.”
Newton Deputy Police Chief Scott Powell said Huebach drove into Harvey County traveling south to southwest and eventually worked his way into Newton, but Huebach wasn’t captured there, and the chase continued to near Park City.
Neither Starkey nor Powell knew whether or where Huebach was apprehended.
