In keeping with George Washington’s birthday, first graders Melissa Johnston and Mike Helmer are pictured cutting out and decorating hatchets, an art project of Lois Anderson’s class at Bown-Corby school.

Joe Costello and Theresa Alvarez reigned as King and Queen at the Centre High School homecoming game Friday. Marion spoiled the royal reception by beating the Cougars 63-59. Attendants to the royal pair were Phil Peterson, Karen Ecklund, Rose Kristek, Keith Wirtz, Janelle Albrecht, and Doug Beneke.

Sgt. Oscar Becker is retiring from the Kansas Highway Patrol. His position as supervisor of troopers in this area will be assigned to Sgt. William Whitenack, a native of Olathe.

Betty Laue and Harvey Sanders, both of Marion, wish to announce their engagement and approaching marriage. The wedding is being planned for March 17.

A full page of pictures by Pam Vinduska shows five people and asks the question of what each person has in common. The people are Ramona postmaster Paula Fike; Lost Springs merchant Ruth Zinn; Lincolnville café operator Louise Weathers; E&M Café operator Earl Frick, Durham; and Tampa grocer George Kristek. The answer to the question is that in each of their respective towns, they all sell the Marion County Record.
