A picture on the front page shows Luta Creek spilling out onto grass and gardens Saturday morning along N. 4th St. Fed by early morning rains upstream, high waters reminded many valley residents of the still-present danger of flooding.

Larry Loomis, a native of Jewell County, began his new job Friday at Marion National Bank. Loomis, wife Randee, daughter Ashley, and son Brian live at 710 S. Freeborn St.

This week’s Personality Profile features Verona Mullikin, retired teacher and a resident at Marion County Park and Lake.

Mark Horsch and Gene McFall began work July 1 on a comprehensive soil survey of Marion County. The project is an effort of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Soil Conservation Service and the Kansas State University experiment station in Manhattan. Purpose of the survey is for conservation and to assist the county in assessing land values.

Five Marion youths — Janice Wiens, Bill Turk, Kevin McGahee, Bill Edmunds, and Tony Turk — are earning wages this summer as employees under a federally sponsored work program.
