Probably the most serious aspect of the recent flood on the Cottonwood and tributaries in Marion County has been the damage to bottom farm lands and growing crops.

Henry Loveless, 36-year-old farmer of the Antelope community, this week started working at his new job as county undersheriff. He takes the place of Paul Herpich who recently resigned to take another position in McPherson.

School boards of Marion Dist. 1 and Sunflower Dist. 14 met jointly Monday for the voluntary annexation of the latter to the city school system. This is the second district to join No. 1 in recent weeks. Bixler, No. 39, made a similar move some time ago.

Membership in the county 4-H clubs has climbed greatly during the past year to an all time high of 409. Last year’s count was 251. The total includes 216 boys and 184 girls among the 15 active clubs.

Mrs. T.B. Matlock, one of the city’s outstanding women for more than 40 years, died Tuesday morning after an illness of several months. For more than 20 years she planned and directed all of the major dramatic presentations of the town and trained children in dramatic art. Her classes included hundreds of children through those years.

Mr. and Mrs. Karl Gaston, owners of the Mayflower Theatre in Florence for the past 13 years, are celebrating their anniversary next week by having a special showing of “Call Me Mister,” and awarding free orchids to the ladies attending the movie.

Van’s Time Shop moved Wednesday into a new location two doors west of the building it formerly occupied. The new location is in the building which housed Johnson’s Barber Shop. Earl Van Buren, proprietor of the jewelry store states he will have much more room for his jewelry and watch repair business.
