Clear skies and a good sun will bring the beginning of harvest next week for more than 160,000 acres of wheat in Marion County, Carl Elling says. Some fields may yield 25 bushels per acre and some as low as 4 to 5, with the average about 12 to 15, the county agent predicts.

A.L. Havlik, Marion veterinarian, leaves Sunday afternoon by plane for Mexico, where he will be employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist in the fight against hoof and mouth disease in certain areas of Mexico. His appointment is for an indefinite period, probably several years.

Pictured on the front page is a “cool, happy little miss” who knows the right formula for hot Kansas summers as she waves her hand and kicks her feet for the camera. She is Jo Ann Stroda, 8-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stroda of northeast of Marion.

Each restaurant operator in Marion has been notified of the things he must do to meet the standards of a city restaurant ordinance passed recently, Dr. O.C. McCandless, county health director, reports.

Bonnie Jean Slifer celebrated her 4th birthday June 23 with a party at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Slifer. Guests were Mary and James Melton, Bonnie and Barbara Bechtold, Bobby Barrett, Janice Weber, Clydeen Edmonds, Milly Lou Matthews, Jimmy and Elsie Smith, and Rosalie Dohner.

George N. King of Fillmore, California, left Wednesday after visiting friends from early days in Marion. He is a son of O.J. King, early-day pastor of the Presbyterian church. His father served three separate pastorates in 1871, 1875, and 1879. The parents are buried in Marion Cemetery. Only six or eight of his early-day friends remain here, he says.

Misses Donna Powell, Coleen Vogel, and Alta Stenzel, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Powell and Mrs. Jake Stenzel, spent Friday and Saturday in Kansas City. The girls were guests Friday night at Research Hospital School of Nursing and on Saturday took pre-entrance exams preparatory to entering nurses’ training this fall.

Academic honors and awards for 1946-’47 went to the following area young people attending the University of Kansas: Mildred Garrison and Harold Ehrlich, Marion; Carole Ruhlen and Verlena Titus, Florence; and Clyde Edward Jacobs, Herington.
