Alumni come home for reunions
Coming home to reminisce is the theme next weekend in the county.
Marion
Marion’s 113th annual Old Settlers Day will be Sept. 28. Included will be Marion High School class reunions, opportunities to reminisce about city history, and events including a parade, picnic, and golf tournament.
Organizer Alex Case will announce the start of the parade at 11 a.m. in front of his insurance agency, Case & Son, as he has done for 25 years. His father, Casey Case, was the announcer before him.
The younger Case is part of the class of 1979, who will celebrate their 45th class reunion at this year’s event.
“I don’t know how excited I am about it, but it’s going to happen,” he joked.
After the parade, a picnic held in Central Park will be accompanied by lawn games for children and music from the Marion High School band.
Each class going back in five-year increments from 2024 is invited to turn out to Old Settlers Day.
“If you graduated in a year ending in four or nine, you’ll probably have a class reunion this year,” Case said. “Normally we’ll have around 10 to 12 reunions.”
Class recognition at the Central Park stage is expected to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Central Park. The classes will also hold dinners together that Friday or Saturday evening.
A golf tournament at Marion Country Club is planned for that Friday. Marion High School’s football team will play its homecoming game the evening of the 27th against Sedgwick.
The oldest group participating at this year’s event will be the class of 1954, which will be celebrating its 70th reunion.
Tradition is part of the allure of Old Settlers Day.
“It’s pretty much the same thing every year,” Case said. “But I look forward to it every year.”
Hillsboro
Hillsboro High School alumni plan eight class reunions Sept. 28 and an alumni dinner at 6 p.m. that evening at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.
Honored classes gather before the dinner. The class of 1954 will gather at the home of Caryl Wiebe. The class of 1964 will gather at noon at the home of Charlotte Takahaski. The class of 1984 will gather at noon at the Hillsboro Golf Course clubhouse.
Times and places for other reunions for graduating classes from years ending in 4 and 9 were not available.
Homecoming festivities will kick off at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the high school football game.
For the fourth year, the alumni association is raising money for a Hillsboro Trojan Family memorial scholarship.
