Apparent BB shot shatters windshield

Apparent vandalism of a Tabor College student’s car this past week when it was parked on campus has Hillsboro officers scratching their heads.

An estimated $500 damage was done between 3 p.m. Aug. 18 and 11 p.m. to the rear window of a 2017 Honda CR-V owned by Kami A. Steinbacher, 21, of Justin Texas.

Steinbacher thinks someone may have shot the window with a BB gun, but officers couldn’t find a pellet hole, police chief Dan Kinning said.

“It’s actually almost like it exploded out, because there was glass outside it,” he said. “Usually if you strike a windshield with something from the outside it goes inside, so we are just not sure what was used.”

Kinning doesn’t think the windshield had to be broken from the inside, though.

“I don’t believe it was,” he said adding that he was sorry for the student’s frustration and expense at finding a shattered windshield.

Anyone with information about the damage is asked to contact Hillsboro police at (620) 947-3440.
