Ballet tiptoes in with beauty

Staff writer

Nearly 400 Hillsboro residents brought lawn chairs and blankets to raptly watch 40 Wichita performers and two Hillsboro ballerinas performed Saturday at the community plaza.

Ballet Wichita’s Ballet in the Park danced to “Once Upon a Time, a Fairytale Ballet” before Hillsboro’s final downtown cruise for the season.

The ballet featured dancers in fairytale character costumes and tutus whirling across the stage.

In the ballet, Cinderella heads to a royal ball, but her fairy godmother’s magic fails, and she is taken to Princess Aurora’s christening.

Cinderella attempts to return to her own ball, but Maleficent appears to create trouble.

Her fairy godmother tries to send Cinderella back to her own story, but her magic again misfires, sending her to Beauty and the Beast.

The fairy godmother’s magic then works correctly, and Cinderella is sent back to her own story.

Ballet Wichita also performed Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Peabody. It was scheduled for a park next to Vintage State Bank, but bad weather caused the performance to be moved inside.
