Boy mauled
by family pet

A 9-year-old Peabody boy was rushed to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita after he was bitten on the face by a dog last week in the 900 block of N. Maple St. in Peabody.

Peabody firefighters provided first aid while Marion ambulance was en route.

Fire Chief Colton Glenn said firefighters knew about the bite immediately after it happened because both parents are connected to the fire department.

The dog had been sleeping on a couch when the boy came home from school Nov. 12.

The dog apparently was startled. He jumped up, being about head level with the boy, and bit him on the face.

The family has owned the Labrador retriever about 7 years, Glenn said, and it never before has bitten anyone.

“It was no vicious dog by any means,” Glenn said. “It’s been a good dog. It’s been the nicest dog.”

Mallory Lies, the boy’s mother, said the dog was in quarantine for 10 days.

“We’ve already reached out to our trainer and our vet,” Lies said.

Both say a dog’s unexpected behavior usually is an indication of illness. The dog, who is current on its rabies vaccinations, will be tested, Lies said.

Glenn saw the boy a few days ago, and he looks to be recovering nicely.
