County lake fishes around
for ways to spice up fall weekends

Staff writer

The weather may be getting cooler, but visitors to the county lake are promised a hot time during several events this fall.

First will be a crappie tournament Sept. 18.

The county lake’s annual chili cook-off will be 11:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Oct. 2. A car show is planned during the cook-off.

Fee to compete in the cook-off is $15. For $5, visitors will get a bowl, a spoon, and the right to sample entries and pick the winners.

“You will get a voting bean to place in the cup of your favorite,” lake supervisor Isaac Hett said. “We will have door prizes every hour and trophies and prizes for the winners of the cook-off and car show.”

The fishing tournament, set to start at daybreak, will be a first at the county lake, Hett said.

“It’s going to be an early morning,” he said. “As soon as enough safe light comes up for the boats to go out, we’ll start.”

Entry fee is $50 a team.

Half will go to projects at the county lake and half will be prize money. The lake will close to public boating until 3 p.m. during the tournament.

Fall is a good time to catch crappie at the lake. Dropping temperatures trigger the fish to feed.

The third week of September is a little early in the season, but the date didn’t overlap with other tournaments, Hett said.

“Crappie is probably the most sought-after fish out here,” Hett said.

Competitors will fish until 2 p.m., then gather at the lake hall, where judges will weigh the best five fish of kayak and amateur teams and the best seven of professional competitors. Prizes will be awarded.

Hett aims to have another competition at the aheated fishing dock.

“We’ll plan on having a spring tournament because the dock should be done by this fall,” Hett said, adding that a concrete foundation was poured.
