County track teams place in top 10 at Halstead, win at Norwich

Hillsboro and Marion traveled to Halstead on Friday to compete in the Conrad Nightingale Invitational track and field meet. Out of 18 schools present, Hillsboro boys and girls both finished sixth. Marion girls laced seventh while Marion boys finished ninth.
Hillsboro’s Abbigail Williams won in shot put. Marion’s Madisyn Hulett right behind her in second.
Hillsboro’s Seth Driggers won in the 200 and placed second in the long jump and 100.
Marion’s Kellen Waner was second in pole vault.
Marion’s Dylan Kraus was second in the 400.
Hillsboro’s Addison Jost was second in the 800 for girls, and Marion’s Luke Wessel was second in the 800 for boys.
“As a coach, I am immensely proud and feel blessed to work with such a committed group of athletes,” Hillsboro coach Demetrius Cox said. “Their efforts in practice are truly paying off, allowing them to showcase their abilities at a high level against formidable competition.”
Marion coach Grant Thierolf also was pleased.
“A much better meet this year at Halstead than we had last year,” he said. “This is one of those meets where the coaches have to remind themselves how young of a team we have. Zayden Janzen cut almost 30 seconds off his PR in the 3200, great improvement in one week.”.
The Warriors will be on the road this Friday at Beloit. The Trojans will be hosts for their own invitational Friday.
Goessel girls win at Norwich
Goessel girls captured first place Friday in a 14-team meet at Norwich.
Cheyenne Sawyer was a double winner in both hurdle events.
Aimee Funk won the 100 and came in third in the long jump.
Abbigail Funk finished second in the 200 and third in the 100.
Goessel’s 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams came in first, and its 4x400 team crossed the finish line second.
The boys team finished in fifth place .
Eli Gaeddert led the team with a second place in the 3200 and a third in the 1600.
Javin Schmidt added points with a second-place finish in the 800.
Centre’s Plett wins
Jenaya Plett led Centre on Thursday at the Council Grove Invitational, winning the 400 for the Cougars. Right behind her, teammate Jimena Sanchez came in second.
Olivia Carlson placed fourth in the long jump and triple jump. She placed fifth in the 100 hurdles.
Allie Stuchlik placed fifth in the 3200.
The boys 400 relay team, consisting of Micah Carlson, Michael Herrera, Robert Spohn, and Samuel Rziha, finished fifth.
Micah Carlson also placed sixth in the 400.
