Court rejects bid to get off registry

Staff writer

A Marion man’s appeal of a 2019 order to register as a violent offender was rejected Friday by the Kansas Supreme Court.

His claims earlier had been rejected by the state court of appeals.

Aaron D. Unruh, 46, Marion, originally was charged Aug. 29, 2017, with aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14, aggravated indecent solicitation of a child younger than 14, and criminal restraint.

In a deal, he pleaded no contest Nov. 8, 2019, to two counts of aggravated endangering a child and one count of criminal restraint.

As part of the plea deal, a charge of promoting obscenity filed in a separate case was dismissed.

Unruh was sentenced to a year’s community corrections and ordered to pay $558. He additionally was ordered to register for 15 years as a violent offender.

In Unruh’s appeals, he argued that revised sentencing guidelines violated federal and state constitutions.

Unruh previously was charged in October, 2015, with battery of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement, disorderly conduct, lewd and lascivious behavior, and being a pedestrian under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In a plea deal, he pleaded guilty in March, 2016, to disorderly conduct and being a pedestrian under the influence. He was given a suspended sentence of six months.

In December, 2011, he was charged with two counts of sexual battery. In May, 2012, he pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor battery and was sentenced to a year’s probation.
