Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

SEPT. 14

12:40 p.m. — Checking on the welfare of a resident of a Parkside Homes duplex, Hillsboro police discovered a death. A coroner was called, and Hillsboro firefighters helped lift the body.

1:33 p.m. — A caller who phoned someone else to report that he was having a heart attack and was lying on the ground outside a home on Prairie Lane at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

1:53 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman who fell down basement stairs at a farmhouse on Indigo Rd. north of 300th Rd. was taken to Newton Medical Center by Hillsboro ambulance. Durham firefighters helped lift the patient.

3:04 p.m. — A 63-year-old woman who was found having a seizure while lying on a floor in the 1100 block of Denver St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

7:32 p.m. — An 83-year-old woman running a fever of 101.9 degrees and having difficulty breathing after having been treated for a broken hip was taken by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to Hillsboro Community Hospital.

7:33 p.m. — A disoriented 57-year-old woman who was having difficulty urinating was taken to HCH by Marion ambulance from Salem Home, Hillsboro.

9:01 p.m. — After suffering two more seizures, the 63-year-old woman who earlier was taken to St. Luke from the 1100 block of Denver St. was found unconscious and again taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:10 p.m. — What initially was thought to be a house fire on Goldenrod Rd. north of 120th Rd. turned out to be a large, unreported, and barely controlled burn. Goessel firefighters, saying the owners “don’t know what they’re doing,” informed them of the need to report and control the fire. Peabody and Hillsboro firefighters and Hillsboro ambulance initially were dispatched but were told to disregard the call.

SEPT. 15

1:48 a.m. — Using code words indicating that the call was related to COVID-19, dispatchers tried to send Peabody ambulance, which did not respond, then sent Marion ambulance to Peabody Health and Rehab for an unconscious 80-year-old woman with sporadic breathing. Five minutes later, dispatchers told Marion ambulance to disregard the call. Then, eight minutes after that, the ambulance service’s shift supervisor reinstated the call, saying the patient was not breathing. Six minutes after the ambulance and supervisor arrived at 2:32 a.m., both returned to quarters after reporting that the patient’s physician said she had died.

8:43 a.m. — A motorist who pulled to the side of US-56/K-15 near Diamond Rd. and requested an ambulance after suffering chemical burns from asphalt several days earlier changed his mind after a deputy sheriff arrived and decided to go home or to a hospital on his own. Hillsboro ambulance, which had been in Marion for training at the time, returned to its quarters.

4:13 p.m. — A fire alarm at Tabor College’s sports complex was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to be a false alarm.

10:39 p.m. — A woman with abdominal pain after giving birth declined to have Hillsboro ambulance take her to a hospital from the 700 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro.

THURSDAY

12:51 p.m. — A 28-year-old man with chest pains at Hilltop Manor apartments in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:59 p.m. — A 66-year-old woman who experienced chest pain and passed out at Bomgaar’s in Hillsboro after receiving previous medical treatment was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

5:43 p.m. — Hillsboro police, sheriff’s deputies, Hillsboro ambulance, and Hillsboro firefighters were sent to an abandoned vehicle on its side, with a door open, in a creek at 250th and Indigo Rds. Although a driver’s license was found, no occupant of the vehicle could be found at the scene.

FRIDAY

11:33 a.m. — A 28-year-old man, unconscious on the floor after throwing up and reportedly having had a heart attack the day before, was taken by Marion ambulance to St. Luke from Hilltop Manor apartments.

11:53 a.m. — A 67-year-old man with altered mental status was transferred by Peabody ambulance on physician’s orders from Peabody Health and Rehab. The ambulance originally was destined for Newton Med but was diverted to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

2:26 p.m. — An HCH patient with pneumonia was transferred to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita, by Hillsboro ambulance.

8:09 p.m. — An 87-year-old man who pulled out a kidney tube was taken from Salem Home to Wesley and then back to Salem by Hillsboro ambulance.

SATURDAY

6:03 a.m. — A 70-year-old man who fell and may have broken his arm at Hillsboro State Bank declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:08 a.m. — A vendor who got sick to her stomach at a booth across from the Real Estate Center at Hillsboro’s Arts and Crafts Fair declined to be treated by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:30 a.m. — An elderly woman receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation and bleeding from the mouth after suffering what was described as cardiac arrest at a Cottonwood Point campsite at Marion Reservoir was taken to Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially was dispatched, but the county ambulance director switched the call to Marion ambulance.

10:39 a.m. — A 71-year-old woman who fell at Emprise Bank in Hillsboro, hit her face, suffered a nosebleed, and was disoriented was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:50 a.m. — With Marion and Hillsboro ambulances handling other calls, Peabody ambulance was ordered to standby at 190th and Nighthawk Rds. to handle any additional calls until a backup ambulance could be staffed. in Marion at 11:30 a.m.

10:58 a.m. — A person who fell off a scooter near First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro was checked by an off-duty ambulance attendant but declined further treatment by Hillsboro ambulance personnel after they arrived.

11:35 a.m. — An Arts and Crafts Fair attendee with diabetic issues was treated by an ambulance attendant near Main St. and Grand Ave. but declined to be taken to a hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:48 a.m. — A man who fainted in the 400 block of N. Locust St. in Peabody declined to be taken to a hospital by Peabody ambulance.

1:32 p.m. — A man complaining of weakness and vomiting at a farmhouse near 210th and Quail Creek Rds. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

3:14 p.m. — An HCH patient was transferred to Salina Regional Hospital by EagleMed helicopter ambulance.

4:14 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Newton Med by Marion ambulance.

SUNDAY

2:09 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Kansas Heart by Marion ambulance.

5:47 p.m. — A woman who fell out of a golf cart on Lakeshore Dr. at Marion County Lake and injured her head was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Ambulance attendants arranged with a neighbor to round up three dogs that got loose in the accident.

9:07 p.m. — A 92-year-old man who fell near 235th and Alfalfa Rds. and became disoriented was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

9:29 p.m. — A St. Luke patient was transferred to Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, by an EagleMed helicopter ambulance.

MONDAY

5:06 p.m. — A 91-year-old woman who fell at Parkside Homes was taken to Newton Med by Hillsboro ambulance.
