Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

OCT. 1

8:25 a.m. — A 70-year-old woman thought to have suffered a heart attack in the 900 block of Locust St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Hillsboro ambulance. The ambulance returned at 10:21 a.m. to Marion, where its crew had been training when the call came in.

6:03 p.m. — A 71-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Peabody Health and Rehab to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:56 p.m.

OCT. 2

1:12 a.m. — A 26-year-old man vomiting what he thought might be blood at an apartment in the 100 block of W. Santa Fe St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, by Marion ambulance.

3:50 p.m. — An uninjured 74-year-old woman who fell at a farm near 310th and Upland Rds. was helped up by Lincolnville first responders. She declined to be taken to a hospital by Tampa ambulance.

4:43 p.m. — A 65-year-old woman feeling ill and running a fever at a home in the 600 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

6:36 p.m. — A 74-year-old woman with a stomachache and trouble breathing at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:28 p.m. — A combative 86-year-old woman behaving abnormally after taking sleeping pills at a home on Schlotthauer Dr. at Eastshore was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded.

11:09 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance was sent to Hillsboro Community Hospital to transfer a patient to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. However, the trip was delayed until after Marion ambulance made an emergency transfer from St. Luke to Wesley at 11:26 p.m.

THURSDAY

1:22 a.m. — Upon Marion ambulance’s return to the county, Hillsboro ambulance went ahead with the delayed, non-emergency transfer from HCH to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 3:37 a.m.

10:16 a.m. — At a physician’s request, a lethargic 91-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Bethesda Home, Goessel, to NMC Health. Goessel first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to the county at 12:10 p.m. and headed to Marion for supplies.

4 p.m. — A 55-year-old man with low blood pressure at Westview Manor in Peabody was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health.

6:04 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by during a football game in Goessel. At 7:46 p.m., the ambulance transported a patient from the game to HCH.

6:10 p.m. — At a deputy’s request, a 55-year-old man with head injuries from a previous accident near 280th and Remington Rds. was evaluated by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital.

6:41 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 7:46 p.m. at a football game in Marion.

6:56 p.m. — An uninjured man who fell in the 200 block of S. Date St. in Hillsboro was helped up by Hillsboro first responders. He declined to be taken to a hospital. A call to Tampa ambulance, dispatched because Marion and Hillsboro ambulances were at football games, was canceled before the ambulance arrived.

9:22 p.m. — An 88-year-old man with pressure on his chest was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:46 p.m.

FRIDAY

12:11 p.m. — A smoky backyard fire involving a shed and multiple vehicles on Narrow Rd. in Canada and popping as if ammunition were involved was controlled within 30 minutes by Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody firefighters, some of whom remained on the scene for two more hours. Marion ambulance, the county emergency manager, and a state fire investigator also responded.

2:21 p.m. — A 68-year-old man with atrial fibrillation was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:50 p.m.

2:26 p.m. — A combine fire at Chisholm Trail and 160th Rds. was extinguished within half an hour by Goessel firefighters.

3:44 p.m. — A 54-year-old man bitten by a dog in the 100 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

6:26 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 9:19 p.m. at a football game in Peabody.

6:34 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left to stand by at a football game in Goessel.

6:47 p.m. — Called away from the Goessel football game, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Parkside Homes in Hillsboro for a 93-year-old woman who may have broken a hip in a fall earlier in the day. The ambulance took her to NMC Health.

6:56 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was dispatched to US-56 and Nighthawk Rd. to stand by until Hillsboro ambulance returned to the county at 8:31 p.m.

SATURDAY

1:01 p.m. — A carbon monoxide warning at a home in the 400 block of S. Cedar St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm.

2:10 p.m. — An uninjured 79-year-old woman who fell at Hilltop Manor in Marion was helped up by Marion ambulance attendants. She declined to be taken to a hospital.

3:41 p.m. — Ramona firefighters were dispatched to provide mutual aid at a fire near Zion Brethren in Christ Church in Dickinson County.

4:09 p.m. — Marion ambulance was called back to Hilltop Manor for what appeared to be the same 79-year-old woman who experienced weakness and fell. The woman, diagnosed with COVID-19 earlier in the day, was taken to St. Luke.

4:55 p.m. — A fire alarm at County Haven Inn in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been accidentally activated.

6 p.m. — A 79-year-old man with sepsis was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 9:48 p.m.

6:10 p.m. — Fire that engulfed a large portion of a rental home in the 700 block of S. Washington St. in Hillsboro was brought under control within an hour by Hillsboro, Marion, and Durham firefighters. Many remained on the scene an additional 2½ hours. Hillsboro ambulance and the county emergency manager also responded.

6:47 p.m. — Tampa ambulance was paged to stand by in Hillsboro in case of additional calls.

8:34 p.m. — A woman bleeding from her ear after a domestic dispute at a rental home in the 300 block of S. Lincoln St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. A few minutes earlier, a man thought to have been involved in the dispute showed up at St. Luke, claimed he had slit his wrists, and left. Police and sheriff’s deputies located him, rode with him to St. Luke, and then placed him under arrest and took him to county jail. The ambulance returned to Tampa at 10:19 p.m.

SUNDAY

10:18 a.m. — A woman who hurt her arm in a one-vehicle accident on Remington Rd. north of US-56 was examined by Marion ambulance attendants but declined to be taken to a hospital. Marion firefighters and rescue squad members also were dispatched.

5:56 p.m. — An unresponsive 77-year-old woman was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Parkside Homes to HCH.

6:28 p.m. — With Hillsboro ambulance busy, Marion ambulance was dispatched for a medical alarm indicating that an 87-year-old man had fallen at a home in the 100 block of Floral Dr. in Hillsboro. He declined to be taken to a hospital.

9:55 p.m. — A 69-year-old woman with a history of heart problems who fell multiple times at Homestead Senior Residences, Marion, was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance.

MONDAY

11:15 a.m. — An 82-year-old man who hurt his arm and back in a two-vehicle accident at US-50 and Nighthawk Rd. was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance also responded and checked two others who reported injury, but they were not taken to a hospital. Peabody firefighters and rescue squad members also were dispatched. A helicopter ambulance briefly was dispatched but quickly canceled. Tampa ambulance stood by until 12:38 p.m. at the Hillsboro ambulance station in case of additional calls.

11:40 a.m. — Diverted from the Peabody accident, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to the 100 block of N. Winfield Ave. in Burns to take a 35-year-old man in pain after a recent traffic accident to Wesley, where the ambulance was diverted from NMC Health. Burns first responders were paged but did not answer. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 2:48 p.m.

1:56 p.m. — A 51-year-old man with a stomachache at a home on Vista Rd. just south of Lost Springs was taken to St. Luke by Tampa ambulance. A Lincolnville first responder also was dispatched.

4:45 p.m. — An unauthorized fire related to a lawnmower at a location described only as the west end of Santa Fe St. in Marion was extinguished within 30 minutes by Marion firefighters who noticed the fire and asked for police to respond as well. Additional details were not available because police encrypted their transmissions.

5:52 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance stood by until 7:49 p.m. at Joel Wiens Stadium for a football game.

5:58 p.m. — Marion ambulance stood by until 7:32 p.m. at Warrior Stadium for a football game.

8:18 a.m. — A 55-year-old woman with a fever, body pain, and cardiac issues in the 400 block of S. Grant St. in Marion declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

10:07 p.m. — A 50-year-old man who slipped in a bathtub and hurt his arm and hand at a home in the 300 block of W. Cemetery Ln. in Burns declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Burns first responders also were dispatched.

10:59 p.m. — With Marion ambulance still in Burns, Hillsboro ambulance transferred a patient from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 1:04 a.m.
