Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:

OCT. 15

6:33 a.m. — A 77-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and trouble breathing in the 200 block of W. 11th St. in Florence was taken to NMC Health, formerly Newton Medical Center, by Marion ambulance. The ambulance returned to Marion at 8:46 a.m.

9:07 a.m. — A 93-year-old woman dizzy and having trouble breathing in the 700 block of Lawrence Ave. in Durham was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Tampa ambulance. A Durham first responder provided initial evaluation of the patient.

10:54 a.m. — A 66-year-old man with cardiac issues was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke Hospital to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:11 p.m.

5:31 p.m. — A 22-year-old man with a compromised airway was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance on an emergency basis from HCH to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 7:48 p.m.

8:53 p.m. — A 93-year-old woman with stroke symptoms at Parkside Homes duplexes in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

10:17 p.m. — An odor outside a residence in the 700 block of E. Main St. in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters not to be natural gas.

OCT. 16

1:37 a.m. — Goessel firefighters were called to help a McPherson County ambulance with a 72-year-old man suffering convulsions near 29th Ave. and Chisholm Trail Rd. in McPherson County.

11:10 a.m. — A 61-year-old man with congestive heart failure who fell and hurt his leg in the 100 block of S. Wilson St. in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Hillsboro firefighters helped lift him.

12:48 p.m. — A woman in her 60s who fell at the Marion post office was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift her.

3:14 p.m. — A 73-year-old man who fell in a shower and hurt his neck and back at a residence in the 100 block of S. Cedar St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. The county ambulance director also responded to the call.

4:18 p.m. — Upon delivering its patient to St. Luke, Marion ambulance transferred a different St. Luke patient to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 7 p.m.

4:36 p.m. — An unresponsive 85-year-old man with abdominal pain at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

6:40 p.m. — A 69-year-old man in septic shock was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Welsey. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:22 p.m.

7:51 p.m. — A smoke alarm at Jost Hall on the Tabor College campus was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been activated by a cooking mishap.

THURSDAY

4:55 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left its station to stand by until 8:20 p.m. at a football game in Hillsboro.

5:24 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left its station to stand by until 7:28 p.m. at a football game at Centre.

11:50 p.m. — A 77-year-old woman stuck in her chair at a home in the 500 block of N. Cedar St. in Marion was helped up but declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance.

FRIDAY

6:40 a.m. — A 77-year-old woman with abdominal pain and swelling at a farmhouse near 190th and Jade Rds. was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

7:11 a.m. — Marion ambulance returned to the 500 block of N. Cedar St. where once again a 77-year-old woman needed help getting out of a chair. She again declined to be taken to a hospital.

8:25 a.m. — The 77-year-old woman brought in to HCH earlier was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to McPherson Center for Health for surgery. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10 a.m.

10:16 a.m. — An unresponsive elderly man with low blood pressure at Wendy’s in Hillsboro was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance.

11:13 a.m. — An odor outside the Special Education Cooperative building on Lawrence St. in Marion was determined by Marion firefighters to be a false alarm caused by sewer work across the street at Hilltop Manor.

11:22 a.m. — A 40-year-old woman with abdominal pain was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health.

1:32 p.m. — En route back to its station, Marion ambulance was redirected by telephone to a call at an undisclosed location. The ambulance reported that the patient was not sick or injured and declined to be taken to a hospital.

1:34 p.m. — An 86-year-old man was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 4:22 p.m.

6:25 p.m. — Tampa ambulance left its station to stand by until 8:31 p.m. at a football game at Centre.

8:14 p.m. — Firefighters from Burns, Durham, Hillsboro, Lincolnville, Marion, Peabody, Ramona, and Tampa helped mop up a wildfire in Geary County until almost 4 a.m.

8:55 p.m. — A 63-year-old man with a deep vein thrombosis was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from HCH to Kansas Heart. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 11:17 p.m.

SATURDAY

1:21 a.m. — Although the call originally went to Hillsboro ambulance, Marion ambulance ended up transferring a 42-year-old man with sepsis and pancreatitis from HCH to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

3:46 a.m. — With Marion ambulance out of the county, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to the 300 block of W. 3rd St. in Florence for a 77-year-old man who fell down stairs and experienced some stroke-like symptoms. Marion ambulance, returning from Wichita, opted to take the call instead and transported the patient to Wesley, to which it was diverted from NMC Health.

8:42 a.m. — A medical alarm activated at a farmhouse near 120th and Falcon Rds. was determined by Hillsboro ambulance attendants to have been accidentally activated.

1:55 p.m. — Hillsboro ambulance left its station to stand by until 4:46 p.m. at a football game at Tabor College.

2:16 p.m. — Tampa and Durham firefighters spent 45 minutes helping Roxbury firefighters battle a combine and bean stubble fire at 350th and Chisholm Trail Rd.

2:36 p.m. — A 62-year-old woman with abdominal pain was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 4:56 p.m.

5:13 p.m. — An unconscious and clammy 70-year-old man at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Florence was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance. Hillsboro ambulance initially responded as well, and Tampa ambulance was sent to Hillsboro to stand by in case of additional calls. Both dispatches were canceled, however. Marion ambulance returned to its station at 7:05 p.m.

7:20 p.m. — Although Marion ambulance originally was dispatched, Hillsboro ambulance ended up transferring a 73-year-old man with a small bowel obstruction from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 9:08 p.m.

SUNDAY

1:14 a.m. — A mix-up in dispatching caused Lincolnville first responders and Marion rescue squad members to be dispatched along with Tampa ambulance and firefighters to a one-vehicle accident at 330th Rd. and K-15. The call to Marion rescuers and Lincolnville responders was canceled, and Durham responders were called instead. Tampa ambulance attendants then asked for a paramedic to join them to help stabilize the 18-year-old involved in the accident. Hillsboro ambulance met Tampa ambulance on K-15 en route to HCH’s helicopter landing pad, and a LifeSave helicopter took him to an unidentified hospital.

1:20 a.m. — Peabody firefighters notified dispatchers that they would be extinguishing a burn pile in the 700 block of W. 3rd St. in Peabody.

6:14 p.m. — A smoke alarm at Harms Hall on the Tabor College campus was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been activated because of a cooking mishap.

7:59 p.m. — Marion and Hillsboro ambulances both headed toward US-77 and 120th Rd., where an accident was reported. However, deputies reported that no one was injured in what turned out to be a vehicle hitting a deer.

8:47 p.m. — A 71-year-old man who fell and hit his head at Parkside Homes was taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance also responded but was told to disregard the call.

MONDAY

7:46 a.m. — A 54-year-old man with COPD was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Marion at 10:25 a.m.

11:57 a.m. — It took Marion firefighters half an hour to find but only 10 minutes to extinguish a brush fire at 210th and Yarrow Rds.

6:40 p.m. — A patient in his 40s shaking to the point of seizure with a fever was transferred by Hillsboro ambulance from Westview Manor, Peabody, to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 8:45 p.m.

8:46 p.m. — A minute after its return, Hillsboro ambulance was sent to HCH to transfer an 8-year-old patient with hypoxia to NMC Health. The ambulance returned to Hillsboro at 10:26 p.m.

9:51 p.m. — A 55-year-old woman with an obstructed bowel was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley. The ambulance returned to Marion at 1:41 a.m.
