Broadcasts about these fire and ambulance calls were monitored this past week by the newspaper:
MARCH 25
3:12 a.m. — An 81-year-old man who fell and may have hit his head at a farmhouse near 110th and Mustang Rds. was taken to Hillsboro Community Hospital by Hillsboro ambulance.
11:26 a.m. — A grass fire that spread to railroad property near 270th and Falcon Rds. was battled for about an hour by Durham firefighters. Tampa and Hillsboro firefighters also were dispatched but were told before they arrived that they would not be needed.
6:27 p.m. — An 84-year-old woman experiencing weakness at Bethesda Home in Goessel was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
8:50 p.m. — A 56-year-old cardiac patient was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
MARCH 26
3:53 a.m. — What was described as a half-mile of hedge row on fire after a controlled burn the day before near Indigo and 110th Rds. was extinguished after two hours by Peabody and Hillsboro firefighters.
4:19 a.m. — Fire in a ditch and on an Evergy power pole near 110th and Alamo Rds. was contained within 15 minutes by Goessel firefighters.
5:27 a.m. — A Hillsboro firetruck was redirected from the fire near Indigo and 110th Rds. to a utility pole on fire at D and Ash Sts. in Hillsboro. The fire was extinguished within 45 minutes.
THURSDAY
10:42 a.m. — A carbon monoxide alarm sounding at a home in the 400 block of S. Cedar St. in Hillsboro was determined by Hillsboro firefighters to have been a false alarm, probably caused by power being disconnected.
11:59 a.m. — A 75-year-old man in pain at a home in the 700 block of N. Elm St. in Peabody was taken to NMC Health by Hillsboro ambulance.
5:04 p.m. — A 55-year-old man at Westview Manor in Peabody declined to be transferred by Hillsboro ambulance to NMC Health.
7:03 p.m. — A 72-year-old woman who fell at a house on 275th Rd. in Pilsen was taken to NMC Health by Marion ambulance.
8:32 p.m. — A 13-year-old boy stuck for nearly half an hour in a restroom at Pizza Hut in Hillsboro was freed by Hillsboro firefighters and police.
9:37 p.m. — After returning from Newton and restocking, Marion ambulance transferred an unspecified St. Luke patient on an emergency basis to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.
FRIDAY
12:53 a.m. — Immediately upon returning from Wichita, Marion ambulance transferred from St. Luke to Wesley a 7-year-old girl needing orthopedic services.
2:51 a.m. — With Marion ambulance en route to Wichita, an intoxicated 69-year-old man vomiting blood at a home in the 400 block of S. Roosevelt St. in Marion was taken to St. Luke by Hillsboro ambulance.
9:49 a.m. — After waiting nearly an hour for the patient to be ready to transfer, Marion ambulance transferred from St. Luke to Wesley a 65-year-old man with gastrointestinal bleeding. The ambulance was diverted to McPherson on its way back to pick up the county ambulance director and drop him off in Hillsboro. The ambulance returned to Marion at 3:43 p.m.
6:11 p.m. — Parents of a nearly 2-year-old girl who suffered a seizure at a home in the 100 block of S. Church St. in Burns decided to take the girl, evaluated as being in serious condition, to a hospital themselves instead of having Marion ambulance take her. Burns first responders arrived 15 minutes before the ambulance and provided initial evaluation.
SATURDAY
8:58 a.m. — A 67-year-old woman who fell at a home in the 600 block of Main St. in Florence was taken by Marion ambulance to Susan B. Allen Hospital, El Dorado.
6:54 p.m. — An 18-year-old boy having seizures at St. Luke was transferred by Marion ambulance to Wesley.
7:06 p.m. — With Marion ambulance already on a call, Hillsboro ambulance was dispatched to Marion’s Sports and Aquatics Center at the request of law enforcement to examine the lacerated leg of a 30-year-old man. Delayed at St. Luke, Marion ambulance was able to take the call instead. However, the patient declined to be taken to a hospital, so Marion ambulance went back to St. Luke and completed its transfer to Wesley.
SUNDAY
5:40 a.m. — A 67-year-old man constipated while undergoing chemotherapy at a home near Lakeshore Dr. and Upland Rd. at Marion County Lake was taken to St. Luke by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters helped lift the patient.
7:18 a.m. — An unconscious man in his 80s at Salem Home in Hillsboro was taken by Hillsboro ambulance to Wesley on an emergency basis. Marion ambulance also responded.
9:53 a.m. — Marion ambulance transferred an unspecified patient from St. Luke to St. Francis. En route, the ambulance reported a vehicle not staying in its lane on Sunflower Rd.
10:22 p.m. — A 30-year-old man with a history of heart problems was transferred by Marion ambulance from St. Luke to Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
MONDAY
1:52 a.m. — A man with a bloody nose after a one-vehicle wreck that blocked northbound lanes of the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout declined to be taken to a hospital by Marion ambulance. Marion firefighters directed traffic until a wrecker arrived.
10:52 a.m. — A 60-year-old man who collapsed and stopped breathing at Cooperative Grain and Supply’s crop production facility on Santa Fe St. in Hillsboro received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from a Hillsboro first responder and was defibrillated twice before being taken to HCH by Hillsboro ambulance. Marion ambulance attendants assisted and accompanied the patient to HCH.
12:12 p.m. — Still at HCH, Hillsboro ambulance attendants asked for a LifeStar helicopter to transfer the patient to Kansas Heart Hospital.
12:35 p.m. — With both ambulances still at HCH, where they would remain until almost 2 p.m., Marion ambulance attendants volunteered to go to a report of a 67-year-old woman choking at a farmhouse near 100th and Alamo Rds. Attendants asked for Tampa ambulance to be dispatched to stand by at Canada in case of additional calls but were told insufficient personnel were available to fully staff Tampa ambulance. Dispatchers then were asked to find an out-of-county ambulance to respond to the call at 100th and Alamo. Hesston ambulance accepted. Goessel first responders assisted.
5 p.m. — A tractor fully engulfed in fire near 280th and Falcon Rds. was extinguished within 15 minutes by Durham firefighters.
7:07 p.m. — Goessel firefighters reported and quickly extinguished a ditch fire at 27th Ave. and Cheyenne Rd. in McPherson County. Moundridge firefighters also responded.
11:16 p.m. — An unresponsive but breathing 70-year-old woman at a home in the 300 block of Lombard St. in Lincolnville was taken by Marion ambulance to HCH at her family’s request. Lincolnville first responders arrived nine minutes before the ambulance and provided initial care and evaluation. Hillsboro ambulance also responded but was told to stand down.
