Executive sessions

To the editor:

I read with great interest your piece on executive session protocols in Marion.

I was a city manager in the state of New Jersey for 30 years. In New Jersey, the law governing executive sessions is contained in the Open Public Meetings Act, colloquially referred to as the “Sunshine Act.”

Under that act, the contents of an executive session, including the minutes, are required to be published as soon as the issue being discussed in closed session is resolved.

Is that also the law in Kansas? If so, it would be a valuable addition to your editorial and a way to announce that we are watching and holding elected officials accountable.

My wife and I live in Woodstock, New York, and are avid readers of your paper. Keep up the excellent journalism, and a shout out to Phyllis Zorn.
