Girls teams head into break with victories

Three county girls teams are heading into Christmas break and the new year with victories.
Hillsboro
The Trojans put together a strong second half to ice Southeast of Saline 44-25 Thursday.
“Coming off a tough week at the Moundridge tournament and again on Tuesday facing a very talented 3A team at Halstead, I was hoping we had enough gas in the tank to show up and execute and compete at a high level against another tough opponent,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said. “I was very pleased with our effort tonight.”
Hillsboro’s defense kept the Trojans in the game for the first half; Saline led 17-15 at halftime.
“I challenged the girls to dig deep and play with confidence and just trust in each other and play with confidence,” Ratzlaff said. “They did just that in the second half.”
Amyah Werth, Ella Potucek, and Talia Jost led the team with scoring.Jost pulled down five rebounds as well.
“Our goal is to enjoy the game of basketball and to compete at a high level and accept every challenge in front of us,” Ratzlaff said. “I am proud of my team and my amazing coaches on a daily basis.”
Hillsboro (3-3) won’t be back in action until Jan. 7 against Wichita Trinity (2-3).
“We are all looking forward to a chance to take a quick break and get back into it after the holidays,” Ratzlaff said.
Goessel
Goessel’s girls picked up a lopsided victory Friday night against Douglass, 52-15.
“We have battled injuries, illnesses, and several other unfortunate absences from some key players so far this year,” coach Ryan Hoopes said. “However, I am pleased with our effort and how we are developing throughout this early season.”
Three players reached double digit scoring in Friday night’s game.
Delaney Duerksen scored 12, Aimee Funk scored 11, and Brooklyn Wuest scored 10. Abbigail Funk contributed as well with nine points.
“We have the pieces to put together a strong squad this year and I’m excited to see these girls level up throughout the remainder of the season,” Hoopes said.
Goessel (2-2) will be back in action Jan. 7 against county rival Peabody-Burns.
“This is a very competitive group that is willing to work hard to compete each day,” Hoopes said.
Marion
The Lady Warriors held on till the end to beat Sterling 41-37 Thursday.
“This was a great win for our girls heading into break,” coach Jason Hett said.
Kenna Wesner led the team in scoring with 17 points. Erin Regnier scored 11.
“They battled tonight, and I am very proud of their effort and grit they showed throughout this game,” Hett said. “Our defense to close the game out was five girls refusing to lose who got some big stops.”
Marion heads into break with a 4-2 season record and will be back in action Jan. 7 against Wichita Classical (5-1).
Centre
Centre was no match Friday night in Lost Springs for Canton-Galva, losing 52-21.
Sydney Smith led the team in scoring with seven points. Olivia Carlson scored six.
Kelbie Kidd knocked down a much-needed three pointer to start the second half.
The Cougars (0-6) will be on break until Jan. 3 when they play host to Pike Valley (2-4).
“Once we are back in the gym we will be working on basic fundamentals to be able to handle defensive pressure and working at getting better shots,” coach Alan Stahlecker said.
Peabody-Burns
The Warriors played Herington on Friday, but no scores were posted. They will square off Jan. 7 against Goessel.
