Girls victorious heading into last week

Three of four county girls’ teams won heading into the final week of regular season play.

Hillsboro

The Lady Trojans made a statement in Friday’s home game against Council Grove, winning 51-22.

Ella Potucek led the team with 28 points; eight two-pointers, and four three-pointers.

Daisy Klein backed her up with 12 points, including two three-pointers.

Because of weather, Hillsboro moved its Tuesday game against Hoisington to Monday, and won again, 43-28.

The girls are now on a three-game winning streak.

Hillsboro will hit the road Friday to play Nickerson in the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Marion

The Lady Warriors beat Sedgwick 37-20 on the road Friday night.

Kenna Wesner led the team, scoring 13 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Kate Wessel backed her up with eight points. Shaliah Ensley scored six, Hailey Harshman scored four, and Erin Regnier scored four.

Marion will play its last game of the regular season Friday at home against Central Christian Academy. Marion will honor their senior athletes during the game.

Goessel

The Goessel girls spoiled Herington’s homecoming, winning 36-24 Friday.

The game was tied 11-11 early in the second quarter, but Goessel took the lead before halftime. The Bluebirds maintained a four-point lead at the third quarter break.

To start the fourth period, Brooklyn Wuest scored four points, and Aimee Funk hit a three-pointer to grab a 31-20 lead.

Trying to catch Goessel, Herington repeatedly sent the Bluebirds to the free-throw line, where Goessel made five of 12 to seal the victory, 36-24.

Aimee Funk led the Bluebirds with 15 points. Abbigail Funk added 9.

Goessel is now 11-7 overall and 4-3 in the Wheat State League. The Bluebirds will be at home on Friday in a non-league contest with Hartford (13-5).

Centre

Centre played a makeup game Saturday against Canton-Galva, losing 58-39.

Olivia Carlson led the team with 15 points. Ryleigh Jones scored nine, and Hailey Barton scored eight.

On Monday, the Centre girls picked up their third victory of the season on the road against Solomon, winning 37-21.

Sydney Smith scored 12, Carlson scored 10, and Jones also scored 10.

Centre will be host Friday to Chase County for the last game of the regular season.
