Goessel girls win at homecoming
Staff writer
Only one girls team was able to secure a victory last week, and it came just in time for homecoming.
Goessel
The Goessel girls jumped out to a 12-0 lead in Friday’s homecoming game with Wakefield.
Brooklyn Wuest scored from close range and Abbigail Funk from deep as Goessel went into halftime leading 18-7.
The Bluebirds started the second half scoring six unanswered points, with Delaney Duerksen scoring easy baskets on sharp passes from teammates.
Goessel ended the third quarter leading 26-12, and the Bluebird defense kept the Bombers at bay the rest of the way as Goessel finished with a 15-point victory, 34-19.
Wuest led the team with 16 points. Funk tallied 10.
The Goessel girls are now 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league games. Friday’s game will be at Herington (5-9 and 1-3).
Hillsboro
The Lady Trojans were unable to close the gap Friday night, losing 28-23 against Halstead.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team after tonight’s effort,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said.
Halsted was coming off its first loss of the season and was able to bounce back against Hillsboro.
“Our coaches put together a game plan to try to slow them down and hopefully put us in the game in the fourth quarter, and the girls were locked in and executed that game plan,” Ratzlaff said.
It was a one-possession game, 18-15, heading into the final period.
“Offensively, we just couldn’t put enough points on the board even though we hit some big shots and free throws down the stretch to keep us in the game and give us a chance,” Ratzlaff said. “Again, [I’m] super proud of the effort, and this group has been a joy to coach through one of the toughest schedules around.”
The Lady Trojans will be back at home Friday to play Council Grove.
Marion
The Lady Warriors were lopsided losers, 62-17, at home Friday to a nearly undefeated Moundridge team.
Kenna Wesner led Marion with six points and five rebounds. Taryn Kraus scored four.
“I thought we played a great first quarter,” coach Jason Hett said. “We were active and moving and did a really nice job on the defensive side of the ball to start the game.
“We did not handle the ball well enough to stay with a very talented Moundridge team the rest of the way. This was a tough week for us, but we will regroup and continue to get better.”
Marion will be on the road Friday against Sedgwick.
Centre
The Cougars get hit with a sizable loss Friday night, losing 69-8 to the state’s No. 1 ranked team, Little River.
Hailey Barton put Centre on the board with six points. Olivia Carlson scored the team’s other two points.
“They are the No. 1 ranked team in 1A Division 1,” coach Alan Stahlecker said, “and there is a reason for that. They are very good.”
Centre was scheduled to play Peabody-Burns this week, but Peabody-Burns canceled its season. Friday’s opponent, if any, is uncertain.
