Hillsboro, Goessel win tourneys

Hillsboro
The Trojans swatted aside all competition Saturday to win the Douglass Invitational.
Hillsboro defeated El Dorado, Douglass, Leon-Bluestem, and Augusta in straight sets.
In the finals, the Trojans met their toughest match of the day, splitting the first two sets with the Garden Plain Owls.
Kingzley Ratzlaff extended Hillsboro’s lead to five in the third set, which allowed Hillsboro to maintain the lead.
“I was very proud of the girls for the way they played throughout the day,” coach Sandy Arnold said. “First, it was the day after homecoming, and second, we were late to the tournament due to an unforeseen detour and a train delay.
“I thought the girls played each match at their level. That was important going into the finals because we knew Garden Plain was going to be a tough opponent.
The Trojans’ next games will be Tuesday at Smoky Valley.
Goessel
Goessel’s volleyball team had little trouble with its Wheat State League opponents last week, defeating Wakefield 25-6, 25-8, and Rural Vista 25-5, 25-8.
In Saturday’s tournament at Olpe, Goessel breezed through matches against Madison, Olpe, Bishop Seabury, and Northern Heights, giving up only one set where the opponent scored more than 15 points.
The Bluebirds faced a challenge from Wabaunsee but eventually prevailed in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, to win the round-robin tournament for the second year in a row.
The Bluebirds are now 19-2, enjoying a nine-match winning streak, and 5-1 in Wheat State League matches.
Goessel will be at Canton Galva Tuesday for two matches and then back at Canton Galva for a Saturday tournament.
According to MaxPreps, the Bluebirds began the week ranked No. 3 in Class 1A Division 1.
Peabody-Burns
Peabody-Burns took on Republic County and Bennington on Saturday, losing both games.
The Warriors quickly turned that around with victories against St. Xavier and Wakefield. Adyson Winter led the team in kills and aces.
“We’ve only got a few weeks in our season left, and I hope we can finish strong,” coach Clarissa Dutton said. “The team’s making progress every match, and we’re learning a lot as we go this year.”
Peabody-Burns will travel Monday to St. Xavier.
Centre
Centre placed fourth Saturday at the Herington Invitational.
The Cougars defeated Rural Vista, lost to Sedgwick, and defeated Canton-Galva, finishing with losses to Wichita Homeschool and Herington.
“We are happy to get out of pool play and get fourth, but we are continuing to strive for more as we continue into the league tournament in two weeks and regionals in three weeks,” coach Emily Hutchison said.
The Cougars are 9-11 and 4-3 in district games.
Centre will travel Tuesday to Goessel on Tuesday for its next games of the season.
“Our players are working hard to achieve our goals each day,” Hutchison said.
Marion
The Warriors traveled Thursday to Berean Academy, winning in straight sets.
Marion is now 10-9 for the season and 6-3 in district games.
The Warriors will travel to Herington Thursday to play Herington and Council Grove.
