Hillsboro splits wrestling opener

The Trojans opened their season Thursday against Minneapolis and Halstead.
Minneapolis defeated Hillsboro 39-27 before Trojans rebounded to beat Halstead 45-22.
“It’s always nice getting the first competition under our belt to get a gauge of where we are and what we need to start to focus on, as a team and individually,” coach Scott O’Hare said.
Three of six matches against Minneapolis involved Trojans wrestling on varsity the first time.
“I’m glad they got those matchups, as they need to gain that experience,” O’Hare said. “We only had four contested matches against Halstead, and I thought the guys competed better in those matches.”
On Saturday, Hillsboro girls traveled to the Doug Kretzer Klassic in McPherson but did not place.
“Although it’s not showing up yet in the win-loss columns, these girls are battling tough, learning, and with each match, they showed progress,” O’Hare said.
The boys and girls teams will hit the road Friday for next matches at Ellis.
“This is a tough sport already, and when things get hard in practice and in competition, the only way to expect to come out on top is to remain tough and grin through it,” O’Hare said.
