Joanne Foyle
Services for Joanne Christine (Vogt) Foyle, 82, who passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2025, at her home in Emporia, were this past weekend.
She was born July 16, 1942, in Hillsboro to John and Emil Fern (Newton) Vogt. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1960.
During college summers, Joanne worked as a checker at Vogt’s IGA in Hillsboro, which her father owned.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westmar College in 1964 and married Harvey Foyle on Aug 7, 1964, in Hillsboro.
She began her elementary teaching career in Downers Grove, Illinois, in 1964.
While raising her two sons, she remained active as a substitute teacher.
In 1980, Joanne began a 23-year career as a fourth-grade teacher at William Allen White Elementary School in Emporia. She completed a Master of Science degree from Emporia State University in 1989.
Joanne was deeply involved in her community. She was a faithful servant and member of the Emporia First United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women organization for many years.
Other highlights of her church involvement included being a member of her Sunday school class, serving on various committees, working at church garage sales, participating in her women’s circle, and playing as a Jubilee Ringer.
Beyond her church and family commitments, Joanne was an active volunteer. She served as a Cub Scout den mother and later as president of P.E.O. Chapter GT, proudly wearing her daisy pin.
In her personal time, she enjoyed playing bridge, reading with her book club, watching Hallmark Christmas movies, cooking her famous porcupine meatballs, making cheese balls, baking peppernut cookies, having dinner with friends, and traveling.
Above all, she cherished spending time with her grandchildren.
Joanne was known for her deep faith in God, cheerful and kind demeanor, and unwavering commitment to her family. She was described as sweet, honest, steadfast, compassionate, and always willing to help others.
Her love for her husband of 60 years never wavered, and they shared a lifetime of joy together. Harvey believed she genuinely was a saint.
Joanne is survived by loving husband Harvey Foyle of Emporia; sons Douglas Foyle (and Laura Wurtz) of Connecticut and Kevin Foyle of Houston; grandchildren Jackson and Elisia Foyle and Hudson and Audrey Foyle; and sister-in-law Karleen Vogt of Hillsboro.
She was preceded in death by brother Jerold Vogt in 2009.
A private service was conducted at Haven of Rest Cemetery in Hillsboro. Pastor Ross Baker officiated a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at First United Methodist Church in Emporia.
