Lucy Janzen

A celebration of life for Lucy M. Janzen, 93, who died Dec. 19, 2024, at Presbyterian Manor, Newton, will be 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 28, 2024, at Valley United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friends will be encouraged to share memories of Lucy during the service.

She will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery.

Lucy was born Sept. 25, 1931, at a farm 3½ miles west of Marion to Stephen W. and Ida M. (Olsen) Sandwell. She was the third of 10 children.

She went to Canada Grade School and graduated in 1949 from Marion High School.

On Oct. 7, 1949, she married Earl C. Janzen at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Marion. He died Feb. 21, 2015.

Earl and Lucy had been married over 65 years. Together they raised three children, Steve, Marilyn, and Karen.

Lucy was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton.

She is survived by daughters Marilyn Cook, Newton, and Karen Ewy, Wichita; daughter-in-law Phoebe Janzen, Marion; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Evelyn Sandwell and Cora Rogers; brother Kenneth Sandwell (and wife Margie); sister-in-law Janice Rees (and husband Ray); brother-in-law Bob Roblin; and friend Don Croft.

Her parents; husband Earl Janzen; son Steve Janzen; grandson Randall Cook; sisters Dorothy Bradfield, Norma Jean Tussey, Mary Roblin and Edith Sandwell; brothers James and John Sandwell; and sons-in-law Ray Cook and Arlen Ewy preceded her in death.

Lucy worked at Southwestern Bell telephone office, Duckwall’s, and Kaw Theater in Marion before she and Earl were married.

They moved their young family to Peabody in 1959, where Earl became the lessee of Earl’s Conoco station. She was the bookkeeper at the station.

Over the years, she sewed formals and wedding dresses, decorated Christmas felt stockings, and made 32 dolls.

She became Peabody city treasurer in 1976 for 18 years, helped with funeral dinners at Peabody Christian Church and helped with dinners at Peabody Senior Center.

Each fall, she helped the center make peppernuts to sell.
