Orletta Wiebe

Services for Orletta Fern Wiebe, 91, who died June 7, will be 3 p.m. June 24 at Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton.

She was born March 25, 1931, in Hillsboro to William P. and Lillian (Bartel) Brandt. Her mother died seven days afterward and she was cared for by Henry H. and Linda (Penner) Bartel until her father married Anna Ewert.

Baptized at age 13 at Johannestal Mennonite Church, she graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended Tabor College for a year before becoming a Mennonite Central Committee volunteer and later graduating from nurse’s training in 1957 at Bethel College.

She worked in Beatrice, Nebraska, before joining Prairie View Mental Health Center in Newton. She married Marvin Heide on Sept. 4, 1960, and moved to Hillsboro, where she worked at a clinic and at Salem Hospital before later returning to Prairie View.

Her husband died in 1979. On March 19, 1988, she married John Wiebe. The couple lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, until his death in 2009, when she moved to Kidron Bethel Village.

Survivors include children Jerold and Kendall Heide of Wichita, Dennis Heide of Orlando, and Carolyn Henderson of Charlotte, North Carolina; stepsons Gerald and Barry Wiebe; brothers Raymond Goering of North Newton and John Brandt of Yankton, South Dakota; sisters Joyce Barkman of Hillsboro and Pearl McConnel of Sandpoint, Idaho; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials have been established with Live Forward Capital Campaign at Kidron Bethel Village and with Bethel College Mennonite Church.
