Despite being down by five points in the fourth quarter, the Trojans extended their winning streak to six Friday night by beating Council Grove 46-40.

Lincoln Wichert dominated on offense with 24 points. Nash Dickinson scored nine. Noah Beavers pulled down nine rebounds. Easton Shahan distributed the ball well with four assists.

“I was proud of the grit the boys showed,” coach Kyle Kroeker said. “We talked about competitive greatness all year long and we were able to pull it off in the end.

“We are riding our team’s momentum and hope to continue improving each day.”

On Monday, Hillsboro played Hoisington early because of incoming weather.

The Trojans extended their streak to seven, winning 57-40.

Goessel

For the second time this season, the Goessel boys lost to Herington in overtime.

The Bluebirds trailed by as many as nine points midway through the second quarter before scratching their way back into the game to trail 23-19 at halftime.

The Bluebirds went on a scoring streak to start the second half, with Jack Nickel scoring two points, Brayton Base adding five, and Trey Gaddis banking in a lay-up.

The nine-point flurry gave the Bluebirds a five-point lead, but the Railers trailed by only two as the third quarter came to an end.

The lead changed hands several times in the fourth quarter, but Evan Walker muscled in a basket from an offensive rebound to tie the game 40-40.

Goessel missed two free throws with 27 seconds to play in regulation, and the game went into overtime.

The Railers scored before the Bluebirds took the lead when Trey Gaddis hit a three-pointer.

Four missed free throws by the Bluebirds in the last two minutes cost them, however, and Goessel left the Railer gym with a 46-43 loss.

Gaddis led the team with 13 points, followed by Jack Nickel’s 10 and Wyatt Sommerfeld’s 8.

The Bluebird boys are now 3-15 for the season and 2-6 in the Wheat State League.
