Peabody lone survivor of unlucky Friday

Staff writers

Peabody-Burns was the only boys teams to overcome Friday the 13th vibes in Friday’s county basketball games.

The Warriors won their home conference game against Wakefield, 36-20.

“As an athletic director, I am super proud of how well our basketball teams have been playing,” Dylan Brazell said. “Both teams have seen great improvement this year and continue to battle through adversity, such as fighting injuries and playing with such a small depth chart.”

Peabody-Burns will travel to Centre this week as the fifth seed in the Cougar Classic. They’ll open the tournament against fourth seed Rural Vista.

Comeback falls short for Goessel

Goessel’s boys trailed by as many as 10 points Friday but scratched their way back into the game with tough defense., though eventually losing in overtime.

Canton-Galva scored eight points before the Bluebirds registered their first basket.

The Eagles led 28-18 with more than four minutes to play in the second quarter, but the Bluebirds tallied nine consecutive points to trail by one.

Canton-Galva hit four free-throws in the closing minutes of the first half to lead 32-27 at halftime.

Joey Lapp scored 11 of his season high 19 points in the third period, and Goessel led 44-43 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was filled with mistakes by both teams.

Jake Wiens sank a bucket to tie the game at 46. A basket by Caleb Burkholder sent the game into overtime, tied at 50.

Noah Schrag opened the scoring for the Bluebirds, but Canton-Galva answered with a three-pointer. The last two minutes were filled with missed opportunities by both teams, and Goessel came out on the losing end, 53-52.

Joey Lapp led the Bluebirds with 19 points, followed by Koy Smith with a season high 11 points.

Goessel will be playing this week at the Burrton Invitational Tournament.

2nd quarter dooms Hillsboro

It was a bittersweet week for Hillsboro basketball teams — sweet for the girls, who advanced to a fourth-placing state ranking in Tuesday’s Class 2A poll, but bitter for the boys, capped by a 58-49 loss to the Pratt Greenbacks.

Second quarters have proven fatal for the Trojans, and Friday was no different with the Greenbacks leaving Hillsboro in a 33-23 halftime bind.

Brekyn Ratzlaff scored a game-high 27 points, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Greenbacks got 12 points off Hillsboro mistakes to clinch the victory.

The Trojans hung around the entire game, but the damage done earlier made the incline difficult to overcome.

“We made a run down the stretch to cut into the lead, but there wasn’t enough time left on the clock to complete the comeback,” Trojan coach Darrel Knoll said. “It is good to see we continue to compete the second half after falling behind, but we really need to be better during the second quarter so that we don’t have to make such big comebacks”.

The loss dropped Hillsboro to 3-6 on the season. The Trojans will play in tournament action this weekend in Eureka

Scoring drought dooms Centre

Centre and Elyria Christian were tied 7-7 in a home game Friday before the Eagles began to surge ahead.

Gentry Holub, Robert Spohn, and Dane Meier combined for the first seven points.

Elyria then scored four three-pointers, countered by a pair of two-pointers by Holub, to take an 19-11 lead.

Elyria scored 16 unanswered points to open the second quarter, putting the Cougars hopelessly behind at halftime.

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock, with Elyria outscoring Centre. The final score was 55-21.

Holub was Centre’s leading scorer with nine points. Meier had eight rebounds.

After facing Herington on Tuesday night, Centre will be host for the opening round of the Cougar Classic.

Marion extends losing streak

The Warriors lost Friday’s home non-conference game against Inman, 71-31, extending their losing streak to eight game.

Caden Wilhelm led the team with 15 points, followed by Cooper Baily with 8 and Carson Krause with 6. Inman’s Tanner Heckel led the overall game with 22.

“The game on Friday night was just not our best,” coach Donald Raymer said. “I hope we can move past it and refocus as we head into tournament week at Centre,” he said.

Marion will be the eighth seed this week at the Cougar Classic, facing off against first-seed Elyria Christian to open the tournament.
