Peabody told to boil drinking water

Peabody residents are being advised to boil drinking water after a line break resulted in loss of pressure within its water distribution system.

Failure to maintain pressure can result in a loss of chlorine disinfection and bacterial contamination.

The advisory was issued Thursday morning by Kansas Department of Health and Environment and will remain in effect until rescinded by KDHE after completion of repairs and testing in a certified lab.

Residents should:

  • Use bottled water or boil water used for drinking and food preparation for one minute.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and not use ice from automatic icemakers.
  • Flush water lines if water appears dirty by running a tap until water appears clear.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least a minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Supervise children while bathing to enter they do not swallow water. Water used for bathing generally does not need to be boiled, except that people with cuts or severe rashes should consult a physician first.
